“Wow! Service and Quality in the middle of the Icefields Parkway.”

We recently had the pleasure of spending 2 nights at Sunwapta. The accomodation was excellent, we had an open fireplace in our cabin, which was maintained by the resort staff, and lit upon request at reception. We didn't really need the fire, as the room was centrally heated, but it was cosy and delightful. The accomodation was spotless, and beautifully maintained. The staff were excellent, and even when off duty, would acknowledge you with a friendly greeting. We were very impressed with the way the Resort was managed. The Manager has a very hands-on approach, and constantly checked on every aspect of the Resort, to ensure that everyone had a great visit. It was very obvious that the staff really respected him, by the way they responded to his supervision. They had fun! The only downside that we had read prior to our visit, was the cost of the meals. Yes, they do rank with Vancouver and Toronto on cost, but the quality is far superior. Quality is remembered long after cost is forgotten, and we sure remember the quality of the fare at Sunwapta. We had a great visit and would return without any hesitation.

Room Tip: Chose a cabin with a fireplaceat ground level. After you have done easy the walks to theupper and l...

On the positive side this place was amongst lovely scenery, but 30 miles from the shops and civilisation. The cabins were clean and well equipped to cook food but no shop on site to buy anything so the 30 miles to the shops was a bit extreme. The restaurant on site was very expensive and we could not afford to eat there every night, so all in all not a good place to stay. Would not stay again.

Hi Suetoomer!

Thanks for taking the time to post your comments! Also, thanks for the high ratings in sleep quality, cleanliness, rooms and service! We still provide the high standards in service and accommodation that we did in October of 2010 when you stayed.

We agree that we are amongst lovely scenery, surrounded by the amazing Endless Chain and Catacomb mountains with Dragon Peak behind us and the roaring Sunwapta Falls a short walk away.

Our location is often the first reason people choose to stay with us. It is usually for the experience or for the convenience or a combination of the two. On the experience side, it's great for people looking for the type of non-distracted experience with nature that Sunwapta can provide. On the convenience side, some people like to take their time travelling between Lake Louise and Jasper, and we offer the chance to do so.

Suetoomer, you bring up the excellent topic of food, and I would like to take this opportunity to explain to the reader our services at Sunwapta.

In summary, our restaurant serves breakfast from as early as 7am in a guest only area of the restaurant. Breakfast finishes at 11am. Our deli is open from 7am as well, with a selection of fresh made sandwiches, fruit, drinks, fresh baked goods, coffee etc. From 11am until 6pm, in addition to our deli selection, we have short order, and home made soups, stew and chilli. There is seating available in the main restaurant for daytime visitors.

From 6pm the short order and hot items are no longer available, and our kitchen is closed until 630pm in preparation for the evening dining service. Deli items are still available for guests at all times. These would include sandwiches, baked goods like brownies, muffins and cookies, drinks, ice-cream etc. Some of our guests prefer to simply take food from the deli back to their room. We also have some alternate seating for guests that don't wish to take food back to their room.

The evening dining is exceptional and provides the type of ambience one would expect in the heart of the Canadian Rockies: a roaring fire, views of the mountains, tablecloths, candlelight, and our usual friendly service all in our heritage lodge with its original open beam construction. Our dress code is casual and you can find our current menu and pricing on our website.

Again, thanks Suetoomer!

All the best,

Matt Corlett

“Beyond Expectations”

As the only hotel/motel/lodge within 35 miles of the next lodging (the distance to Jasper) I assumed we would be sleeping in a log cabin room, with dated furniture, and eating at a cafeteria or diner. This was not the case. We stayed in one of the main buildings in a large, newly renovated room with comfortable beds and a nook/bay window with table and chairs where you could have a drink and look out at the scenery. The staff was very friendly and helpful. The dining room was very comfortable with a very good menu and excellent food. Almost up to the level of what might be called fine dining. It's a perfect location to stay for someone traveling south on the Icefields parkway and doesn't want to stay an additional night in Jasper.

Hi gandjan!

Thanks for choosing us, and thanks too for taking the time to share your opinions on TripAdvisor. We're all super happy to see that we exceeded your expectations, and would love to have you back the next time you're in the Canadian Rockies!

I wanted to clarify two aspects of your review for the readers. Readers, if you are wondering what room type gandjan stayed in, it is our Lodge Room. We have a few different types available, but our standard Lodge room available through online booking sites has 2 double beds, full private bath and a large shared sun deck. You can read more about that room, our other rooms, and our room amenities on our website.

I also want to make sure that readers know we may provide something close to fine dining, but it is a casual dress code. Also, guests are always welcome to come in for a glass of wine and desert, or for a selection of our spectacular starters. In other words, our evening dining is meant to be enjoyed. Just be sure to make reservations with our front desk at check in or in advance!

Thanks again gandjan!

The lodge is located right on the highway and is a bus tour stop .. both a bad omen. But the staff immediately erased any fears that I might have chosen the wrong place. They are super friendly and competent. We were walked to our cabin and thoughts of roads and bus tours disappeared. The cabins feel isolated from the road. The room was clean, comfortable and had a nice porch to sit and enjoy a wine before dinner. The dinner was excellent, and the dining room very pleasant. After dinner we strolled a short way to Sunwapta Falls. Very accessible for a quick view of the falls or there was plenty of places around the falls to walk off dinner. The next day, we hiked to Big Bend Campgrounds and enjoyed lovely views. All this without needing to drive anywhere. Breakfast was a treat. A bus tour arrived at the gift shop, but as overnight guests we were led into curved, windowed dining nook, away from the crowds. This is a great stop between Jasper and Banff. Don't forget that it's inside the park and you'll need to purchase a season pass (around $125) to drive to Sunwapta. You'll need the pass for other parks, too, so it's ok .... just a surprise on your first day. Sunwapta is about 30 minutes South of Jasper.

Hi Marshflower!

Thank you very much for taking the time to write this informative review of your stay at Sunwapta! Your review offers some great points for travelers and I'd like to expand on a few points for the readers.

We are located directly on the west side of the Icefields Parkway (Highway 93) which connects Jasper to Banff. This is strictly a sightseeing highway and industrial/commercial transportation is forbidden except for bus tours and deliveries to Sunwapta and the Columbia Icefields located just 50km south of us.

The parkway is the means by which people can enjoy all the wonders of the Parks: glaciers, lakes, water falls, trails and more. It is busy during the daytime while our guests and other visitors are out sightseeing. Many of those sightseeing vacationers, including bus tours, stop at Sunwapta for food, washrooms and shopping.

By 6pm the road traffic diminishes significantly as people are checking into their hotels. No bus tours stop at Sunwapta after 530pm unless they are staying with us. By 8pm in the peak of summer, only a few cars pass by our property with less in the shoulder seasons. By 10pm (it's still light then in summer time!) it's very quiet. In fact, at night you can hear the roar of the falls from the property.

This flow of visitors allows us to dedicate our property and services exclusively to our guests in the evenings giving us a chance to provide the exceptional service and authentic mountain ambience that we do in the evening dining room. In the mornings as noted in Marshflower's review, we have a separate area for guests to enjoy breakfast just in case there is a morning bus.

However, our Front Desk is ALWAYS 100% committed to in-house guest services, providing free sightseeing agendas, booking activities for all the local sights, and helping with maps and tips on hikes and trails and all the best sightseeing in Jasper. Marshflower is one of few guests that have done the 6km hike to Big Bend. It is an 'easy' grade trail and is 6km to the Big Bend, making it 12km return (same trail). We can make suggestions for any level of fitness and comfort!

On a final note, coming to the Canadian Rockies, you will be entering National Parks. Banff, Lake Louise and Jasper and the entire Icefields Parkway are in National Parks and you will need to purchase a Park Pass to visit here. For the most updated information on passes, regulations, fees and where to purchase passes, please visit Parks Canada website here: http://www.pc.gc.ca/pn-np/ab/jasper/visit/visit6a.aspx.

Thanks again Marshflower! We'd love to have you back the next time your in Jasper!

All the best,

My husband and I were very pleased with our stay. Located conveniently between Jasper and the Columbia Icefields which was perfect for us. We had a perfect view of the mountains from our veranda. The staff was very friendly and helpful. Wonderful walk to Sunwapta Falls. The room was lovely, with a fireplace, the restaurant was delicious. Be sure to try the shrimp appetizer. It was a one night stay as we were travelling through, could have easily stayed longer. Remember you are in the wilderness, so no high speed internet here. However, they do provide internet by satellite. Thankyou Sunwapta for making our stay a pleasant one.
