“Astoria Hotel Jasper”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 January 2012

We had limited options for our late booking in Jasper between Christmas 2011 and New Year. We were a lttle hesitant about booking the Astoria but it turned out better than we expected. Though the room was very tight and the bathroom even more so, it was clean and the bed comfortable and the location, in the main street of town was very good. We did however have a couple of issues - one being that the temperature in the room was very hot, even though it was mid winter, and we could find no way to lower it. The second was that when we came to check out we were informed that our $100 bond could not be cleared as the housekeeping staff had to check our room and they might not do this until 3.00pm. This was disappointing and this approach to guests put a slight cloud over our stay.

“Decent At Best”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 December 2011

This hotel was simply ok to me. We decided to go for a random weekend in Jasper and didn't want to pay a whole lot so we stuck with this. The price was very cheap and was comparable to rooms in Hinton. Since we wanted to drink and go to the pubs, we decided to chance it with this hotel instead of having to just drink in Hinton.

The room was very very small and the bathroom was incredibly small too. We stayed two nights and they didn't do housekeeping on it which is okay, I was just surprised they didn't! Our room was right above the bar and you could hear the loud music until the bar closed, so if you are looking for quiet, this place is not for you.

Overall, I call this hotel a party crashing hotel. If you are out having fun and need a place to crash, this would be a good place to go. The price was decent, but I don't think that I will return to this one.

Room Tip: Don't stay here if you need peace and quiet.

“Excellent location, excellent price”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 October 2011

I see a lot of other negative reviews posted about Astoria Hotel, but my experience was mostly positive. The room was certainly big enough (included a small couch and desk), and it included a small refrigerator. The ice machine happened to be broken that day, but the desk manager happily provided ice when we asked for some. The bed was comfy, room was clean. And the location is fantastic - right in Jasper.
I am not sure if management screwed up or if we got a really good price, but it seemed that we only got charged for one night stay, even though we were there for two nights - or else this really was a bargain hotel.
On the negative side, there is no parking lot - you have to put your car across the busy street after unloading - but I suspect that most of hotels in Jasper lack parking lots - the town is densely packed.
The room smelled strongly of bleach when we checked in.
We had a room on top floor at the back of the hotel - at 4 AM on our first night, a truck pulled into the alley behind the hotel and unloaded for an hour, while keeping its noisy engine idlying - I don't think there is exactly the fault of the hotel, since I think truck was unloading for nearby establishment, but it did make noise.

“Good location but basic room”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 October 2011

Ideally situated on the main street so easy to walk to shops - you'll need transport to get to the Tramway. Room was very basic and we had a poor look out over the rear service road.

“Tiny room, Big Oder, Big Price”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 September 2011

We stayed at the Astoria one Saturday in September because it had the most "reasonable rates" and a good location. I put our bags in the room and immediately noticed an unidentifiable oder, something like a strong but unpleasant air freshner or perhaps a bathroom cleanser that had spilled. We were in a hurry to do other things and I assumed we could air the room out when we returned. When we returned in the evening the hotel was fully booked so there was no chance of changing rooms and we had pre-booked and paid for the night. The window did not open so we opened the hall door and turned on a fan and air conditioner. This had no affect but luckily human olfactory senses can adapt to almost anything. The room itself was tiny. Two twin beds, one against a wall with about two feet between the beds and three feet between the second bed and the wall to the bathroom, with a sink in between. Two narrow wardrobes, separated by a two foot shelf, were against the wall at the foot of the beds. A single chair comprised the rest of the furnishings. The bathroom door had to be opened to maneuver into the shower. Barely enough room to move around and virtually no counter space. As for the "reasonable price," 179 Canadian dollars per night. It's called the law of supply and demand. If you are ever in a situation where you have to stay here, check the room first.

Room Tip: Check the room for size, oder, and location to the street
