We booked an Athabasca Cabin (sleeping for 7) at Tekarra for a one-night stay this past August. We were a group of seven (four adults, three children) traveling together. We chose Tekarra based on reviews here, tour book advice, and their availability of the large cabin. The setting is, truly, spectacular. The lodge is located outside the town proper, but is really quite close. Aside from other guests driving through to reach their cabins, you will encounter no noise. That said, the cabins are very old and dated. The word "rustic" comes to mind, but without some of the good connotations that come with that word. The Athabasca is basically one large room, with an alcove with one double bed (literally filling the entire alcove, with the bed touching the wall on three sides), a small separate bedroom with a single bed, a sofa bed and another double bed (also touching the walls on three sides) in the main area, along with a small eating table and VERY basic kitchen. The bathroom is narrow and cramped. It is impossible to change in there, and we designated the small single bedroom as the "privacy room" for changing, etc. While nice to look at from the outside, the cabins are really showing their age. It was very difficult for so many people to share basically one large room and one bathroom. Every floor board creaks, as do the beds, so ANY movement by ANY one during the night can wake the others. The cabin also had a damp smell to it, but it looked clean. The bathroom was particularly "rustic" and none of us felt the least bit clean after showering.
All that said, if you are a smaller group of people traveling and if you want a stunning setting and are willing to put up with what basically amounts to camping-style accomodations, then you will love the Tekarra. I do not say that tongue-in-cheek, either. We spoke with many other people staying here (several couples) and they were all very happy. I think our experience was different given our party size and the level of comfort we'd become accustomed to at other cabins during our Rocky Mountain trip through Alberta and British Columbia.
p.s. Be sure to go on an early-morning hike on the cliff-side trail beginning near the cabins. In the span of a few minutes, we saw three moose and half a dozen Elk, all right along the river below the Tekarra. Spectacular!
