“Spacious comfortable rooms - service a bit lacking”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 February 2012

The suite was large and extremely clean with a separate bedroom and ample counter space in the bathroom. It was equiped with 2 flat screen tv's, a microwave, small fridge, coffee maker, iron & ironing board & complimentary bottles of water. Situated back from the road, it was very quiet at night & I slept very well in the comfy king bed. I didn't get a chance to check the excercise room or pool, but could see the large water slide through the window when driving in which I'm sure is a great enticement for families.

The staff were all very pleasant when you found them, but just weren't very service oriented. There never was anyone out at the front desk, they were in the back room & would eventually emerge after you had waited several minutes. I would suggest installing a one way window in the office so they can see when someone is at the counter or at least a bell to ring for service.

Though the rooms are kept spotless - the housekeepers are either oblivious to things that need replacing/ repairing, too busy to bother or the communication is just not being addressed by maintenance or management. It was inconvenient that the coffee maker was missing the centre part on the lid, so the basket just filled with water but with nothing pushing the spring up, the water couldn't pour into the carafe. Also the plug in the tub wouldn't stay up, so when showering, the water rapidly filled up in the tub. Fortunately the bars of soap are small & thin and I could wedge one under the plug to keep it up. I worked in hotels for many years and a good houskeeping department is trained to look for those things, report them so that they are fixed/replaced immediately.
This was the first time in many years that I didn't leave a few dollars for the housekeeper simply because of the oversights mentioned above not because she didn't do a superb cleaning job.

It's nice that they provide a breakfast buffet but nothing on it really appealed to me. I'm not keen on the rubbery type of scrambled eggs or muffins that taste like a sweet cake with lots of preservatives. Also it was hit & miss at the coffee station if you chose the thermos with hot coffee or the one with ice cold coffee. Not sure why they didn't take the cold ones away.

The bottom line: the product (rooms) are fairly new, very clean & comfortable. They have a good lay out, and everything you need. The hotel seems to cater mostly to long term male guests working temperarily in the area, so maybe that's why they are a bit out of touch with the standard of service that is expected from short term guests. However they are charging big city rates and should provide that level of service. I most likely will stay here the next time I'm in Grande Prairie because it is close to where I have to go and I did like the room. Perhaps my experience was just an unusual one off and I can give a better review after my next visit.

Room Tip: There are four floors. I didn't find any noise issues in my 2nd fl room on the front side of the...

“Rooms are great, staff is average but......”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 January 2012

Pros- the room I had was a king bed room, clean, bathroom was spacious and clean. Staff is average.

But that is where it stops.

Location is not convenient as it was hard to turn into the first couple of tries. Also it is away from everything- mall, arenas, college all places I had to be for seminars.

Could not access the Wi-Fi good thing for IPhones, mine was able to pick up another signal.

Continental breakfast....was horrible! Dirty tables, out of milk, muffins, pancake machine out. I went to the desk and let her know. I went to my room and returned 10 mins later. Nothing changed. Someone had made pancakes and the belt had stopped. The server asked if those were anybody's and suggested I take them as they were just made. I don't think so. One of them had been there about 3mins.

I know that they had hockey teams inhouse, they should have had a 2nd server or stayed up on the breakfast.

This was a turn off for me. I decided to head for Smittys. Which was much better.

But I should not have had to go out for breakfast at all especially paying an average of $149. And $179 per night!

So, needless to say, will not return

“Always happy in a Holiday Inn”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 January 2012

This Holiday Inn is as pleasant as all the others I've stayed at. I stay here for work every 3 months or so and I've never had any complaints. The staff is very friendly and accommodating. The beds are comfy and they have everything I need. The only negative would be that they don't have a restaurant in the hotel, but there's a couple just a short walk away so I wouldn't let that deter anyone from staying here. I would recommend this hotel to everyone.

“Great Stay.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 November 2011

Hotel is newer, very clean. The rooms are nicely appointed with flatscreen tv's. Staff was friendly and front desk even left pool open for an hour extra as several people were still enjoying the facility. Included breakfast was far above average. Convenient location with many restaurants nearby. Will try here first when in town again.

“a gem in the north”

Everytime I travel to Grande Prairie on work, I stay at this hotel. It is a very short drive to the downtown core, close to the exiting highway to drive back south and close to some really dynamic shopping and restaurants.

The City of Grande Prairie, in my mind, is a city of good service and unique flavor. The hotel is the epitome of good service. I have never stayed there and not had access to the same room, a good warm breakfast and such attentive front desk staff.

It is clean, quiet, comfortable and has all the amenities of the larger scale hotel. There is an excercise room, hot continental breakfast area with a free Edmonton Journal, close access to Mike's (a reasonably priced eatery with unique, hearty and delicious selections), free wi-fi or plug in computer access, and free parking with plug ins for winter travel.

I would recommend making reservations because there are a lot of regulars who use this hotel and although I have never had an issue with getting a room at the last minute, the folks who work in oil and gas or forestry are often there and can take up a lot of the rooms.

Make sure that when you have booked this hotel you have booked the Holiday Inn Express, not just the Holiday Inn. There are often travellers finding that they are in the wrong hotel because they booked at one and not the other hotel. Just be aware. The front desk staff have the other hotel on speed dial, just in case such a mistake is made.

Highly recommend this hotel.

Room Tip: Ask for a quiet room away from the tromping booted feet of the guys who do normally stay there - end...
