Lets start off by saying this building began its life as an apartment complex some 40+ years ago. The building is a little worn around the edges, but what you get from the Edmonton House will far and away beat what you will find anywhere else.
Since it is a converted apartment building, every room is a suite and has a kitchen. For those of us who spend lots of time away from home, we appreciate how nice it is to not watch television, eat, sit and sleep in the same bed that you would at most hotels. You also have a balcony with great views of either the river valley or downtown. Sure, the decor isn't exciting, but it does have a homey feel and that is more important to me when I'm on the road.
If I'm going to compare the hotel to home, I'm going to compare the front desk staff to mom. If you need something, they are there to help. Not twenty minutes into my stay, the front desk called to see if everything was acceptable in my room. The next morning when I called to say I'd found cigarette butts on the balcony of my non-smoking room, they offered to change rooms for me immediately. Where in your travels have you ever heard of that kind of service? My point being, if you find something wrong with your room, don't complain on tripadvisor before you call down to front desk. In fact, be a responsible guest and inform front desk if you find something in your room needing maintenance.
Now, on top of all the creature comforts of home, you'll also find a well maintained pool and fitness room, a small convenience store on the mezzanine that is open until 10 pm, a hotel shuttle and wonderful shops and dining experiences within a couple of blocks of your room. I have access to all this, a king size bed in my suite and, if I book my stay online, I pay $89.00 a night on weekends. I say I get way more than what I pay for.
Finally, this is to the management of Edmonton house. On several of my stays, I've had the the distinct pleasure of dealing with Gloria at the front desk. I can't begin to describe how helpful, responsible and personable she has been with me. She genuinely makes me feel like I am a guest and I could easily write a review about her alone.
