“Great staff, nice rooms, excellent value.......”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 July 2011

Stayed here for three nights to visit family in Edmonton. We have been travelling from Ontario by car so have been staying at a lot of hotels. This one is not fancy but good value. I'll run down the pros and cons:

CONS
- an older hotel that was converted to a Holiday Inn a couple years ago......some aspects look their age (some hallway carpets, for example)
- only one elevator for a 6-floor hotel, shared by customers and cleaning staff and their equipment. Seems a bit inadequate.
- beds are clean and comfortable, although they are smaller than we are used to and do not compare to, say, a Hilton bed.
- the free breakfast is minimalist, compared to say a Hampton Inn. Yogurt, some cold cereals, danishes, an egg product ........it is OK but we ended up going to a nearby Starbucks each morning. No big deal.

PROS
- extremely helpful staff, from front desk to housekeeping. They helped us to convert to a suite from a normal room and did so cheerfully. As a fairly frequent traveller, I always want to remark about the importance of good staff at a property whenever I observe it. Fine staff can make an ordinary property shine. Bad, disinterested staff can make a brand new hotel seem awful.

- lots of free and very accessible parking. Health club right next door, with free access for hotel guests.

- free wifi is SMOKING hot, close to 4MB/sec., which is about the same speed as our home network! Compare this to the standard slow-poke internet of most hotels...if they crack 1MB/sec, it's a miracle.

- a very nice room...our suite was spotless and well-equipped.

- a great location for access to other services...Swiss Chalet, Esso station and convenience store are basically right in the parking lot. Across the street, a big grocery store, Future Shot, liquor store, etc. All within very easy walking distance.

CONCLUSION

For $114/night plus tax, in a major city such as Edmonton, this is a good value. Excellent staff, a good if not perfect physical property, clean rooms, very fast internet and close to many amenities, we know we will return on future visits. Thanks for a great stay, folks!

Thank you so very much for those kind words regarding the Holiday Inn Express Edmonton North. I have carefully read your "Cons" and I appreciate the importance of your comments and this will only help us improve our overall quality of the hotel.
I especially love the "Pros" because in this industry we hear more about the "Cons" than the "Pros" and your kind comments are a reflection of our dedicated and customer service orientated staff members who are very hard working and make every effort for you, our dear customer, to have an enjoyable stay.
Many thanks friend,

“Bugs in the bed and AWFUL staff”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 May 2011

My mom and I arrived at this hotel and when we were ready for bed my mom turned down the blanket to find two little black bugs crawling around under the covers. We turned down the blankets on the other bed and found another bug. We called the front desk and when they came up they tried to tell us they're probably just threads. They told us they had no other rooms, so at 11:30 pm we had to try to find a new hotel in a city we have never been to before, on a long weekend. The next day we called to inquire about getting our money back and the supervisor said she would find out and call us back. A manager called back and yelled at us and told us there were absolutely no bugs, we were lying, there was no way we were getting our money back, and then she HUNG UP on me. I spent 3 hours on the phone trying to get our money back from a franchise that can clearly afford it. I would never stay at this hotel again, or reccommend that anyone else stay there.

On behalf of Management and Staff at the Holiday Inn Express & Suites Edmonton North, we sincerly apologize for any inconveniences you may have endured.
I am very proud to let you know we are trained in bug detection in all area's of our hotel by a very reputable local pest control company and all housekeeping staff are dilligent to keep management aware of any suspicious activity in all of our guestrooms.
With that said, your guestroom had been inspected by 4 staff members, who have taken the above training and there were no signs of any bugs, only dark pieces of lint. I clearly heard your frustration when you called and enquired about a refund for this incident .
I am terribly sorry for your scare and since your departure the guestroom has been rented multiple times with no complaints of cleanliness or bugs.
Yours in Hospitality,

“What more could you ask for??”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 May 2011

We needed a hotel for our family of 3 - dh, myself and dd (8) as we were in Edmonton for a dance competition in Sherwood Park. Note to anyone looking none of the hotels in Sherwood Park have pools!! So that had us looking in Edmonton.

The HIE couldnt have been better - super easy to find, fast check in, clean room and a good quality breakfast FREE in the morning.

For a family to have a room that includes breakfast, free internet and a fridge at these prices is excactly what we look for. An added bonus was that the room amenities included shampoo, conditioner and body lotion that all smelled great and worked so no need to pack them!!!

The only reason for the 3 rating on sleep quality was that we were awakened by loud drunk guests in the room next to us at 2 am - but they were very loud. The walls are actually fairly thick. When we complained in the morning the front desk was well aware fo these guests and indicated that we were not the first to complain... hopefully they do something about them before another family loses some sleep listening to them yell.

We didnt call the front desk only because dd slept through them and us phoning down would have woken her up. Oh well...

We would return to this hotel in a heartbeat!

“A Great Place to Stay for the Budget Conscious”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 May 2011

I stayed at the Holiday Inn Express Inn and Suites North Edmonton while attending a seminar. The hotel was located in the northwest side of the city, which was close to the seminar venue. I was greeted by the front desk staff in a happy and energetic way. He seemed happy and genuinely interested in my trip. Check-in was quick and efficient. My room was clean and comfortable. The furnishings were adequate and the bed comfortable. The room had a thermostat to control the temperature of the room – a definite plus for anyone who has tried to adjust room temperature using one of those dials that does not have actual values on the dial. There was no restaurant in the hotel, but lots of eating options within a short distance. Breakfast was free in the morning. It was definitely larger than your standard continental breakfast and had a variety of selections from day to day. Internet and parking were free as well. The hotel had a pool and hot tub. My only criticism would be that the hot tub could have used a good scrub around the edges as there was a build-up from the foam. The only problem I encountered was a problem with my room lock. It was quickly solved by the front desk clerk and posed no further problem. Check-out was also quick and efficient. This is a budget type hotel with limited services, but well worth the cost for the money conscious at $114/night. Most good-quality hotels in Edmonton are usually $125/night and up and don’t include a free breakfast, free parking, and free internet! I would definitely recommend this hotel for business and family travelers.

“Beds are old”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 March 2011

We stayed at this hotel because its closer to our friends. We are not very picky about the hotels we stay when travelling. I agree that the beds are old at this location. The breakfast was okay and we wouldn't be expecting much more. However we are depending on a good bed to rest when we are away from home and this hotel failed to meet our standards. Overall the service and everything was good but we probably would not choose this hotel again because of the beds.
