Stayed here for three nights to visit family in Edmonton. We have been travelling from Ontario by car so have been staying at a lot of hotels. This one is not fancy but good value. I'll run down the pros and cons:
CONS
- an older hotel that was converted to a Holiday Inn a couple years ago......some aspects look their age (some hallway carpets, for example)
- only one elevator for a 6-floor hotel, shared by customers and cleaning staff and their equipment. Seems a bit inadequate.
- beds are clean and comfortable, although they are smaller than we are used to and do not compare to, say, a Hilton bed.
- the free breakfast is minimalist, compared to say a Hampton Inn. Yogurt, some cold cereals, danishes, an egg product ........it is OK but we ended up going to a nearby Starbucks each morning. No big deal.
PROS
- extremely helpful staff, from front desk to housekeeping. They helped us to convert to a suite from a normal room and did so cheerfully. As a fairly frequent traveller, I always want to remark about the importance of good staff at a property whenever I observe it. Fine staff can make an ordinary property shine. Bad, disinterested staff can make a brand new hotel seem awful.
- lots of free and very accessible parking. Health club right next door, with free access for hotel guests.
- free wifi is SMOKING hot, close to 4MB/sec., which is about the same speed as our home network! Compare this to the standard slow-poke internet of most hotels...if they crack 1MB/sec, it's a miracle.
- a very nice room...our suite was spotless and well-equipped.
- a great location for access to other services...Swiss Chalet, Esso station and convenience store are basically right in the parking lot. Across the street, a big grocery store, Future Shot, liquor store, etc. All within very easy walking distance.
CONCLUSION
For $114/night plus tax, in a major city such as Edmonton, this is a good value. Excellent staff, a good if not perfect physical property, clean rooms, very fast internet and close to many amenities, we know we will return on future visits. Thanks for a great stay, folks!
