“Quaint property, great setting”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 October 2011

This was my first visit to Fort Edmonton Park and I was there for a wedding. The hotel is fairly small but the rooms were a good size, clean, and comfortable. The hotel staff were friendly and the entire park is a fun place to visit.

The hotel is a great location if you are attending an event at the park or if you are building your stay around the park itself, otherwise it's a bit of work getting to and from the place, especially at night with the gate system.

“Cozy Historical Hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 September 2011

The Hotel Selkirk is a wonderful little gem in Edmonton. Signage to parking is confusing, and make sure you move your non-period car by 10am if you park on the streets, but once you get there you won't need it. While the staff provided very minimal information at check-in, the stay was quite nice. The room is very simple and quiet. A comfortable king sized bed, a armoire, desk, chair. The air conditioning is comfortable, which is good since you can't open the windows. The bathroom was simple and clean. No TV makes it truly period, but you won't need it since you'll be able to walk the grounds and see and read about the historical buildings after hours and maybe catch a view of a ghost. A great experience!

“Relaxing and atmospheric ...”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 September 2011

If you are looking for excitement and all amenities ... try somewhere else. If you want relaxation, atmosphere, history and an overall great experience, stay at the Selkirk. The ability to travel the grounds in early evening and nighttime as well as wake up to see costumed staff, horses and vintage cars in the streets is worth the price alone. We were able to drive our brand new car in front of the fort, saloon, etc. after hours to take some unique photos of our new "toy". We have stayed in both a suite and regular room and have enjoyed both ... we will be back.
The restaurant .... satisfactory at best but not the reason to stay there anyways ...

“Unique experience”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 September 2011

The Hotel Selkirk is an experience unlike any others we have encountered in Canada. Once you figure out the convoluted way to the parking lot of the hotel, it's a wonderful location. Better signage would certainly aid this. One minor drawback is that you cannot pull your vehicle right up to the hotel to unload your luggage until after the park closes. If you want to check in and unload earlier, you have to walk from the back of the hotel over a gravel parking lot and wooden sidewalk. There are also two steps to negotiate to get into the hotel lobby. Staying right on the grounds of Fort Edmonton is a huge plus for touring the park. We spent 7 1/2 hrs. walking through the whole park and enjoying the exhibits. By staying at the Hotel Selkirk, you can easily go back to your room for a rest if you have young children (or weary elders!). You can also enjoy the park all to yourself after it closes to the public in the evening. None of the exhibits are open but it's wonderfully quiet (a real plus at bedtime). We stayed in a king suite with a separate bedroom. The pullout couch in the sitting area was comfortable enough for an adult to sleep well on. The huge bathroom is lovely except for the fact that there's no shower. For modern people used to showering, it's a bit uncomfortable trying to wash your hair while bent over and using the spray arm (also has potential to get water all over the floor). The bathroom could also use some more shelf area for putting one's toiletries on. There were two wonderful robes to wrap up in. The complimentary teddy bear is a treat for the youngsters to keep as a souvenir. We did not try the restaurant.

“Customer service was poor at best; apathetic, really. Now we understand the critical reviews we read online.”

Our stay was marred by a series og issues:

1) The staff miscommunicated the features of the room rate we selected.

2) Cleaning staff left a humongous sharp pin in the middle of our carpet (thankfully noone stepped on it). When I took it to the front desk clerk, she said a very weak "oh" and threw it out. No expression of concern or apology.

3) Our breakast waitress took forever to deliver our orders and repeatedly forgot to bring water, coffee, cream, spoons and our bill (neither of which ever came - we had to request that front desk staff chase down the waitress and bill our room for us). The server also spilled water as she poured it.

4) The check and check out clerks seemed put out by having to check us in and process our payment.

Fort Edmonton was very interesting, though (with one exception) the young staff had no manners or customer service sense.
