I recently stayed at the Mettera for a shopping weekend with a girlfriend. The hotel is situated right in the middle of Old Strathcona and the Whyte Avenue shopping district. You are within very easy walking distance of great boutiques, restaurants, bars and clubs. There is a frozen yogurt place just down the street and an artisan cupcake bakery across the street; perfect for the sweet tooth.
The hotel lobby is gorgeous. The rooms are well appointed with comfortable beds (double), nice linens and modern in decor. The rooms have a mini fridge with some snack bar items that aren't priced too badly compared to other hotel mini-bars (canned pop or chocolate bars $2).
The bathroom is a decent size with a nice soaker tub, and a huge full ceiling height mirror. Two ladies were easily able to do our makeup at the same time. Lots of towels and decent quality bath products.
The hotel features an included continental breakfast which has fresh fruit salad, bagels, croissants, hard boiled eggs, oatmeal, yogurt and cottage cheese, juices and coffee galore. Very nice! There is also a complementary evening wine and cheese, which I have been to previously and really enjoyed.
The hotel also features complementary valet parking. It can be a bit tricky to time it with an open space so you may have to circle the block a few times. Alternatively, we simply parked down the street and let the valet know where the car was located. It's quite nice if you have been out shopping and need to bring in armloads of purchases.
We faced Whyte Ave and there was a little noise from the excited "woo hoo" bar patrons around 2am on Saturday. My friend did not notice but I did. If you are a light sleeper, you may want to bring earplugs for the weekends. Friday night there was no noise at all.
The location is fantastic, the amenitites and services are great, the decor is beautiful - I would definitely return!
If you need coffee first thing in the morning, make sure your k-cups have been replenished after housekeeping. My caffeine addicted friend had some difficulty in the morning until we went to breakfast.
Room Tip: Higher floors facing Whyte Avenue have great views.
