“Not what we expected...”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 January 2009

4 of us stayed here in Dec on our way to the mts. Passengers on our greyhd raved how qauint it was. We all liked supporting mom pop places so were surprised they had sp. when we called.

Waited 10 mins before someone answered the door. The lady seemed annoyed. Check in was another 15mins. Think they are short staffed.

We were tired but all agreed to stay despite the darkness, old smoky smell that wafted in our rooms. Didn't see any other guests.

Toilet did not work. We told them but was not fixed even when we checked out.

Dinner at nearby restaurant Bacon was good and about local foods.

Nice neighbourhood. If you walk towards river, there are loads of huge homes. Lots of trees and easy to catch bus to downtown.

This is a B&B. The only thing good is the breakfast, unfortunately not the rest of the service.

Think we search out a downtown hotel next time.

Thought spa nearby called Sandlewood (spelt this way) was going to help us relax before our trip to the mountains. Boy, were we WRONG! In the middle of our pedicure/manicure, we kept hearing laughter, profanity coming from the other room. There was this staff member who claimed to be the owner Tracey who was DRUNK and trying to hide her smoking.

Both our esthetician and ourselves were shocked! Totally unprofessional. We will NEVER come back despite how our Esthetician was so apologetic about the whole ordeal. BEWARE

The 2 of us who were waiting for their pedicure/manicure cancelled their appointment after seeing this. Don't blame them.

NOW in the same building is another business named Casa detox. The 2 of us who didn't get the pedicures/manicures turned out to be the lucky ones! They ended up getting fabulous saunas and relaxing massages.

As we waited, we got a chance to chat with the co-owner of Casa. She was like a fountain of knowledge about natural beauty care and herbal things for cleansing....we would have paid for this information!

Many thanks to Lillian and Mavis! And good luck with your relocation and we will look you up after our trip! Gee, we wonder why they are moving.

“Historic is the theme”

My wife and I stayed there on a package deal: a room and dinner. The dinner was fantastic. Everything tasted superb. It is a small restaurant but nicely decorated. We did not go to the bar.

We stayed in the Toulouse Lautrec room. It was very nice. But keep in mind that "Historic" is the theme here. Most hotels build historic-styled rooms from new materials, where La Boheme *IS* historic. The walls and doors are probably around 100 years old, and the floor squeaks. The radiant heating is archaic. But those are the joys of staying in such a place. You really can feel you are staying in a part of Edmonton's history and it's a feeling you will NOT find in even the Hotel MacDonald. (MacDonald's upgrading has left it feeling too modern... losing any sense of history) La Boheme feels European, in a good way.

“The Atmosphere”

After hearing great things in a book about this tiny little boutique in a historic area of Edmonton, three friends and I decided to go to the restaurant for dessert after dinner one night, the B&B only a short walk away from where we were.
When we arrived, it was made very clear by the staff that while advertising themselves as "informal", our business casual clothing was not appropriate. We were only one of two tables at the restaurant...the entire time we were there. And we each ordered a piece of cheesecake with coffee. This arrived almost half an hour later. Our coffee was refilled once...and our plates were never cleared. It was as though the waiter could not be bothered to actually wait on us, probably thrown off by our "appearance". The coffee was not even warm, we had to ask many times for proper coffee to be brought to us, and the dessert was not worth the five minute walk out of our way. The staff are high-brow, and yet have nothing exceptional to be proud of as the food is erratic at best (and at worst, just go to McDonalds). While I've unfortunately had to go back there since for business meetings, I've not once received service that I would expect from a business that wants to keep up an image of casual elegance, or even a fast food chain. Go to Le Tapa, in downtown Edmonton instead. The same type of establishment, without the attached hotel, and it IS informal....and they serve consistantly good food and a very good price. The owners come out and ask how your meal was, and love to sit down and talk about their restaurant (as they are both very proud).
