“its a good Super 8”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 November 2010

for a <$100 hotel in edmonton, its my choice....got kingbed, 42" flatpanel, clean room, climate control with tstat on wall, not on the ac/heat unit....lotsa hot water, internet is tough to stream on, but I got 95% of what I wanted done, done. Hallways have some stains and are that warm kinda stale smell, room was perfect, didnt has to use the airfreshner that I always has packed....theres no views except that of a parking lot and a freeway, but its not a resort, its a place to sleep. And its non smoking.

“Economical but you get what you pay for”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 August 2010

My family of 5 made a last minute trip to Edmonton for the great lady gaga concert on Aug27 and we chose the Super 8 'cause it was a lot cheaper than the show tickets! The hotel room was certainly no highlight. At $109 CDN one doesn't expect the Ritz but having reserved and getting a room with just one bath towel is not a good start. It wasn't dirty but it also was pretty shabby. We had ordered a roll-away bed and when it came it was held together with a tied green plastic grabage bag. Not exactly a bank-breaker to go out and buy a bunjee but I guess if you think your patrons are thieving lowlife, that's what you do. Desk staff were very pleasant. There is free Internet, but in our room and in the lobby the connection is very slow and patrons are warned not to use excessive bandwidth which seemed to mean, sending webmail messages.

The lowest point was the complimentary breakfast in the adjacent trucker's restaurant. Though the website reads "complimentary breakfast" (see www.westedmontontruckland.com/amenities.html) it was actually a so-called continental breakfast (though on which continent such sustenance is common I do not know! )The coffee was weak, served only in styrofoam and, accompnyed by uninteresting toast and cereal options. but worst were the alleged pastries which had obviously been pulled out of the freezer that morning and so were cold, small and wet with condensation. Worse, the "patrons" of Super 8 are cordoned off into a separate section of the large restaurant so that it is not possible (as it is often with complimentary continentals) to pay for an upgrade. The sign greeting patrons to this cheap seats section stated bluntly that you had to display your coupon immediately (I guess just in case some masochist wanted to get these dubious treats for free). I should add that I have stayed at other Super 8s that were way better in every respect.

So, yes, for those ambling about Edmonton this place is cheap and accessible but for not much more you can get better rooms, as good location, and a breakfast that does not make you feel like a sleazy third-class citizen.

“Great value for the money”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 May 2010

We first stayed here in a suite after the hotel we had been staying at when in town, the Sandman, put their rates way up. We have now stayed there twice. The first time, we paid $140 for a suite; the second time, $88 overnight - both rates are really good for a hotel that is only 10 minutes from West Edmonton Mall.

While it is a truck stop hotel, we have never had any trouble here. The rooms are very clean and comfortable, the hotel is quiet, service at the front desk is good, the free continental breakfast is good for a continental breakfast, and the price is really good.

“Spacious Room For the Price”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 May 2010

We had two queen beds, 1 tv, climate control, bathroom, coffee maker and fridge. And still had lots of room to walk around.

Only two things to worry about was the wireless internet and the fridge. The fridge seemed to be worn out, it wasn`t very cold on it`s coldest setting, and they throttle the internet here, whether you are wireless or wired. So anytime their system think`s you`re downloading something huge, the speed goes down to 30kb/s. This makes watching youtube and loading games hard.

I can see why they might do this though. People downloading things illegally through bittorrent, and the hotel has probably gotten a few letters about their bandwith usage. They could solve this problem by just throttling the bittorrent protocol, not the whole internet. You can't even upload a bunch of photos to facebook, after uploading the first few, it just slows down to a crawl.

A/C and heater isn't that loud, and you can just leave it on at night, it cycles on and off and it's pretty quiet. It didn't wake me up at night even though I was sitting in the bed closest to the window. TV had a great cable signal.

It's also 10 min away from the west edmonton mall in the afternoon. Can't beat that. Also right on the corner of the Yellowhead Hwy, so it takes us right back to BC, where we are from.

The continental breakfast isn't much, but on par for what a lot of a hotels serve. You also get a coupon that you can use $2.00 of a breakfast entry in the 24hr truckstop restaurant. I didn't eat the breakfast there, but I did go to the truckstop buffet on the second morning. It's normally $9.50, but with the coupon you can get all you can eat is $7.50. It's the cheapest buffet around!

We got in late the first night and ate at the truckstop restaurant, but the food wasn't all that impressive. It was 10:30 at night, and the breakfast looked a lot better. Different cook, i Guess.
