We stayed at the Ramada Conference Centre Edmonton during two separate trips in December, a time of the year that can be difficult to book at the last minute. We had a family emergency, ended up extending our first stay, then booking a second stay right before Christmas. The biggest inconvenience we had was that when we extended our stay, the room we were in, and the same type of room, were no longer available; so we had to pack up all of our belongings and move to a room in another tower of the hotel. As inconvenient as it was, there was a wonderful young woman who helped me to pack everything up, load it on a cart, and push the cart onto one elevator on the 5th floor of the West Tower, over several rather steep ramps, and onto another elevator and all the way down the hall on the 11th floor to our new room in the North Tower. For our inconvenience we were given a voucher for breakfast. The breakfast was of the continental type, cold cereal, fruit, yogurt, pastry, juice. It was a very disappointing offering; therefore, we were all the more stunned when we saw the bill that our voucher was stapled to. This breakfast, which is free in many hotels, would have cost us $15 US each!
Our original room had a door that opened out onto a balcony. We were able to use this to control the overwhelming heat in the room, as well as making it into our very own walkout refrigerator. It also helped to relieve the closed in, stuffy smell of the room with it's worn carpet, rather shabby wallpaper, and window casing with peeling painting and unnamed stains. Our new room did not have this amenity, yet it was considered to be a higher quality room. We had difficulty in both rooms with hot water and water pressure, occurring routinely after 11:00 in the morning.
The hallways were always smelly, some having scented deodorizer dispensers that released spray into the air leaving it thick with an overwhelming perfume that would mask a dead body. The only thing worse than that were the hallways outside of the conference rooms that DIDN'T have the overwhelming scented spray!
So okay, why did I rate it a 3 out of 5? With various discounts that were available, we were able to get a room for a reasonable price. It was in a very convenient location with easy access to the areas we needed to go. The staff were friendly and helpful. The lobby area, although we didn't have the opportunity to make use of it, is beautifully done with waterfalls, a stream running through it, footbridges crossing over to the lounge area, and realistic fake plants setting a calm and relaxing mood. While the rooms tended to be worn and shabby, they were comfortable enough.
Yes, we would stay there again, knowing that we are not staying at a 5 star establishment, but at a hotel that would meet our rather modest needs.
