I stayed two nights at the Rosslyn in Mar 2010. It was recommended due to its proximity to CFB Edmonton, in the north end, where I was attending a conference. Having read the previous reviews, I was a little concerned, but everything turned out just fine.
I gathered from my military colleagues that this hotel had a bad reputation in the old days as a pretty seedy and unsafe place. That is obviously no longer the case. I didn't see it from the inside, but from the outside, there is clearly an older part to the hotel, so perhaps that is what other reviewers have complained about. What I did see was absolutely fine.
Reception was a tad slow, but the sole clerk was busy with another patron, then a couple phone calls. I read that check-in was at 3pm, but I was able to get in at 2, so was happy about that. My room was on the second floor (of five, I think). The elevator took forever, so I only used the stairs after that. One time, I came across an employee vaccuming the stairs, an area that I often find many hotels seem to neglect, so that was good.
My room was clean; in fact, the entire hotel does seem clean and well maintained. The room had two Queens, reasonably comfortable. Pillows weren't great, but not the worst either. Linens were a bit old, threadbare in some spots, and one blanket even had a hole the size of my fist. Towels were standard fare, but plentiful. Toiletries provided were lower end, but fine, and lots of them. There was a small fridge, coffee maker, alarm clock, hair dryer and iron/board. TV was an old 27" tube. Overall, I equate the room to that of an older Holiday Inn, nothing special, but nothing wrong with it either.
What I did appreciate about the hotel were the little things. I don't know if it was just for our group, but both days we received a basket of snacks, with muffins, granola bars and cookies, plus a bottle of water they put on ice. Very nice. Most places now seem to have a basket and water, but place an outrageous charge on it. And both days I had a paper. I find in many hotels that they give you a paper the first morning, but never the subsequent ones. Also, they provide a turn-down service, with even a little chocolate on the bed. I never really understood this concept, and it does seem a little corny, but I think it does speak to the efforts of the owner/management to go the extra mile. That's a good thing.
I didn't get a chance to try the on-site restaurant, but I did notice a number of people eating there, and it did smell good at dinner time. The location of the hotel is great - there are a number of restaurants and Starbucks very close, including a Boston Pizza about a one minute walk away. Parking was free and the price of the room was fair.
I don't normally write hotel reviews unless there is something extraordinary about the establishment, be it good or bad. The reason I'm writing this review is that I think people may get an inaccurate impression based on several recent negative reviews. In my opinion, the Rosslyn Inn is a perfectly average hotel. That's not meant to be negative. It doesn't pretend to be something it's not, and it's priced appropriately. And I do heartily applaud management's efforts to try to go the extra mile. I suspect that the owners have spent most of their maintenance funds on renovations to the bathrooms - granite counters that seemed new, tub inserts, new tiling, modern fixtures, etc. So maybe the next stage will be new linens and pillows, and then the TVs.
If I ever go back to north Edmonton, I would absolutely stay here again. If you have any reservations due to the negative reviews, just ask to be given a room in the newer part of the hotel.
