On this trip, my work had booked a meeting at the Mayfield and they paid for regular rooms for each of us in our 10 person group so that we could enjoy a night out after a day of meetings. Upon check in I was served quickly and was given a room in the "courtyard" rooms. I didn't really know what this meant, but they told me I wouldn't get the bar noise. That sounded good to me. So I head over to find my room and find myself walking down a dingy grey dated hallway that looks like a prison corridor. The carpets were old and worn, and visibly very dirty - like no one has taken a vacuum to them in quite some time. As I walked around I couldn't find the elevator to the second floor, as it turns out because there is no elevator in this old section. Given I have a very bad back, it would've been nice to be told there was no elevator in this section since this meant I had to haul my suitcase up the creaky dirty old stairs.
Once I found my room I was shocked by how dark and dingy it was. It appeared that it had nice new bedding but the whole room was like a cave. Small, very dark and there was a vile odour lingering in the air. To my shock, upon lifting the lid to the toilet I found a horrid smell emanating from the brown water inside. Gagging, I attempted a flush which just proceeded to swirl the brown poo water around and around perilously close to the top of the bowl. I have to wonder how on earth the cleaners could miss something like this??? I have a very strong stomach but couldn't stand the horrid rotten sewage smell wafting up at me from this plugged toilet. Obviously the room wasn't well cleaned, if at all. Given past experiences in cruddy rooms, I immediately marched my way back down the prison corridor to go get a different room.
At the front desk I told them my issue and that I wanted a different room. My co-worker who was standing next to me suggested I upgrade to a suite in the tower for a $40 difference (which she had just done as she checked in). Strangely enough when I asked I was told with a smirk "they are all booked". Within 1 minute there was no other rooms in the suites tower? Suspicious of being told no on the basis of discrimination I loudly said if I can't get a better room they may as well cancel my booking and I will gladly drive the 2 1/2 hour drive home instead of staying. Miraculously they came up with a replacement room in the third section of the hotel.
The walk up to the replacement room was marginally better, a brighter hallway, however you do have to walk directly past the nightclub entrance to get to the elevators. The elevator is in serious need of repair. Out of 2 elevators only 1 was working and it is like a competition to get the elevator without some cleaning staff trying to get their carts from one floor to the next. The elevator looks like something out of the '60's. It smells like dried dirty urine and vomit stains and it slowly creaks its way up and down between floors.
The cleanliness of the new hotel room quickly came into question as I immediately noticed dried blood on the toilet seat. Not wanting another hassle with the front desk, I proceeded to clean it myself using shampoo and a wash cloth. This is totally unacceptable in my humble opinion. Suspicious of the condition of the rest of the room, I tore open the bedding to inspect the bed which thankfully looked clean and didn't see any evidence of bedbugs. I decided I could suck it up and make the night in this room.
Later in the evening our work group spent a bit of time in the Gallery nightclub that is located in the hotel. The bar is appropriately nicknamed "wrinkles" and is definitely a meat-market pickup joint for the lonely. Lots of loud bass pounding music and free flowing drinks for the "40 - plus" crowd looking for a good time. If you want to get hit on or picked up this is the place to go. If you are a married person just looking for an innocent drink or two with friends, you will find yourself very uncomfortable in this environment and I would suggest going to a regular lounge instead.
After I retreated to my room I found once I navigated my way past the stumbling drunks and safely onto the creaking scary elevator that my room up on the eighth floor was quiet and I couldn't hear any of the noise from the club. My bed however I found was too saggy for my bad back. I slept great for about 2 hours after which my back pain was so severe my sleeping came to an abrupt end. That and the heat in the room was virtually uncontrollable. I set the vintage 1960's thermostat at 24 degrees but found myself freezing and shivering hours later . Only after looking around I realized they had one of those old style heater units in the room that I had to turn the fan on to get heat. So I turned it onto "1" and it banged and clanged and pushed out heat. No happy medium with this old unit - it doesn't seem to shut down when it gets warm in the room, it just keeps pumping out heat and more heat. Too hot / too cold... thats pretty much how my night went. Turn the fan on, warm up, get too hot, get up turn heat off, couple hours later freezing, get up turn fan back on, etc etc. Not a fun way to spend the night.
Needless to say I was happy to check out in the morning. Front staff were friendly and the checkout was smooth. Out at my vehicle I encountered my final problem which was with parking. I had THREE people hovering behind my truck waiting for my parking spot, and it was only 8:00 am. I couldn't even back out because as soon as I moved my vehicle the three vultures who were waiting all collectively raced to take my spot. After nearly hitting the one lady, i pounded on my horn and proceeded to give her the universal salutation. Seriously, if parking is an issue at 8:00 am why wouldn't this hotel open up more "guest" only parking spots?
The property is dirty and neglected. I didn't really feel safe with the "wrinkles" bar being right in the lobby and near the room elevators. I still feel like the girls at the front desk were lying when they said there were no more rooms in the suite tower but I guess I'll never know the truth on that one. I will not stay here again, if my work decides to use this hotel again as a meeting venue I will attend the meeting but stay elsewhere. Its just not worth the stress of a dirty room and poor rest.
Room Tip: Be sure to ask for room that is in the "Suite tower" and don't settle for anything les...
