“Close to West Ed Mall”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 February 2012

Spent one night at the Best Western Plus Westwood Inn in Edmonton this month. Although the room was clean in was in need of some minor repairs and reno’s, there was a sign up saying that the hotel was under renovations so I am sure they will be getting to that room soon. It was a spacious room that had a work desk, free WIFI available, tv (which did not work well) fridge and a nice jetted tub in the bathroom. I noticed there was an indoor pool but we did not use it, I am not sure if there was a hot tub. There is a restaurant on site but never used that either. This hotel is very close to West Edmonton Mall.

“Not a very good experience.”

For the first time in a very long time I had a very disappointing hotel stay. Arrived on a Monday night during the coldest week of the winter. Got to the room and it was absolutely freezing. After almost half an hour with the heat cranked up, it was still blowing cold air. Contacted the desk who sent someone from maintenance. He said that with it being so cold outside, some of the rooms did not have heat. He brought a portable heater with him. While he was there, I mentioned that the lower TV channels were fuzzy. He fiddled with the tv and the cable box but was not able to get a clear picture. He said that he would bring another box the next day. (This never did happen during the three days I was there.) The floor was very uneven and the coffee maker leaked. When I got back on night 3, someone had unplugged the heater. When I turned it back on, the temperature display indicated that it was 59 (15) degrees in the room. It took a very long time until I could take off my jacket. I was not in the newer tower but in the lower section of rooms. I parked in the back lot behind the hotel and to get to my room it was a bit of a challenge to get through the snow drifts as it had not been plowed very well if at all.

The only positives were that room service was excellent and the bed was comfy.

After my stay, I completed the survey that was sent to me and indicated all of the issues that I had. After a week I still had not heard anything back so went to the hotel web site and completed the feedback form. After a few more days I did get a generic e-mail saying "sorry we didn't live up to your expectations and we hope you give us another try." Even if they had said that they would ensure I got a better or an upgraded room next time I would have considered trying them again but it seemed that no-one really cared that I had not been satisfied with my stay.

Since then, I have been back to Edmonton twice but did not stay here again.

Room Tip: Make sure you get a room in the tower as comments have indicated that they are nicer.

“Misled”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 January 2012

I booked this hotel for one night thru expedia. the night I booked it for was Dec 31, 2011, New Years Eve. I had booked it for 2 queen beds, but upon checking in, I was offered a room with 2 double beds. I said to the front desk clerk that I did not believe this is what I booked, and only upon me being close to finding my reservation on my phone that the clerk admitted that they had no more of those rooms left and all they could offer me was a room with two double beds.
She said that if I did not want the room, they could give me a refund.

I was not looking for a refund, as it was New Years Eve, and where else would I find a reasonably priced room? I ended up taking the refund, but felt very misled as I KNOW that the hotel would have rebooked that room at a premium rate, thereby losing nothing.
I, as the guest, ended up driving back home and spending the night there, having to change my evenings activities.

Would I recommend this hotel? NEVER. They did not honor the original booking that was made.

Dear Valued Guest,

I deeply apologize for this inaccuracy in your reservation. I assure you that this might have been caused due to a glitch between our hotel's system and Expedia and not because that we wanted to sell it at higher price. We respect & value our guests equally irrespective to the mode of making reservation.
I hope that you will give us another opportunity to serve you better and to fade away this unfortunate memory with the quality of service that we offer to our guests.

“Don't let the poor reviews deter you - this is a good hotel to stay at”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 January 2012

I booked a hotel through Priceline.com and after I got the details of the hotel - "BEST WESTERN PLUS Westwood Inn" - I immediately came to this site to look up the reviews. I was very worried based on the poor reviews - but went ahead anyway as I was bound by the Priceline contract. I must say - I was pleasantly surprised - the hotel itself is quite nice - the front desk service was excellent - very friendly, very accommodating and helpful and the service to get an extra cot and then later a request for extra blankets - was VERY fast. The hotel is still undergoing renovations so I suggest asking to stay in the tower rooms. We did and didn't notice any renovations at all. (not sure what they are still working on - but I saw a couple of workers in the hotel one day so they must be doing something) The room we were in was still a bit dated - but this is a 3 star hotel and it was better than the average 3 star. Very convenient to the West Ed Mall, loads of restaurants within a 5 minute radius and very easy to get in and out of. The beds were very comfortable, room was clean and well appointed, nice coffee maker and mini fridge in the room. The little bar down in the basement is different (Monkey Cage) - kind of like a basement rec room bar. Very friendly staff, has a pool table and a few VLT's off in the corner. A TV with sports on if you are so inclined. Comfortable chairs - again a little dated but certainly clean and relaxing. Before you decide not to use this hotel - read some of the positive reviews - they are right on. Generally people will only write a review if it is really really bad - or really really good. In this case - this hotel has had a lot of bad reviews but I honestly think they are the exception and not at all what I experienced or saw when I visited the hotel. I would recommend this hotel for a basic room for a few nights stay. I did not visit the pool or restaurant although both appeared to be just fine. If we had stayed longer we would have for sure.

Room Tip: Rooms in the tower are generally better - at this time anyway. Maybe once all renovations are compl...

“Good location for WEM, needs further renos”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 December 2011

We stayed Dec 21 & 22nd and chose this hotel for its proximity to West Edmonton Mall so we could complete our Christmas shopping en route to Kamloops. The room was booked through Hotels.com and this turned out to be a mistake as Best Western's Gold Crown affinity program did not recognize this as a qualifying rate for earning points. Still we got a very good price. Staff were friendly and helpful at check in and when we had questions about the area. The first night was dreadful. The heat was not adequate, the carpet was puckered, and there were at least three stains on it that we could count, stuffing was coming out of one arm of the sofa, and worst of all when the heating unit cut out it produced a banging sound that woke us up. While all the rooms in the hallway were marked non-smoking we could still smell stale cigarette smoke, possibly from upstairs? We had such a bad night we were ready to check out, forfeit the second night and find a better place. However the staff bent over backwards to make up for the first night. They put us in a king bedroom which was worlds better. I don't think it was freshly renovated but the room was in much better condition. Heat is convection rather than fan-forced from a wall unit. Features included upgraded amenities and a jetted tub. While we had problems with the first room the staff were so accommodating and desiring to make up for it that we would book this hotel again simply for the care and concern they showed. We were very grateful for that. It is a great location if you are visiting WEM.

Room Tip: Ask for a tower room.
