“Location Great, Hotel Quiet, But Attention to Detail Lacking”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 January 2012

This was my second stay at The Varscona, and my husband's third or fouth stay. (We have been travelling back and forth to Edmonton for appointments.) Great location on Whyte Avenue with many eateries and shops within walking distance (The Continental Treat Cafe, Chapters, etc). It is easy to get downtown by public transit and equally easy to take car to reach other parts of the city. The hotel is quiet but the service lacks attention to detail. We arrived late and were not informed that the hotel was having problems with the Internet. (The towers were down and had been down off and on all evening.) We wasted an hour trying to access the internet, which included a fruitless call to the IT 800 number suggested by the front desk. The IT person finally said that we needed a cable and he would contact the desk to send us up one. More waiting, no cable. Called desk. Response: We have no more cables. We have given them all out to other guests. The desk sent night person to refire towers, suggested we wait a bit longer and try again. Tried again, no results. Next, the night person did go offsite to get a loaner cable for us (thanks) but internet still not working. By the following morning the internet was working. But why not just tell us that upon arrival? Next, the continental breakfast. Good selection, especially fresh pastries. But no cream on Day 1 (sour, couldn't put it out) and Day 2 (none, and no explanation.) A little thing , sure, but details matter. Day 2: We decide to meet back at the hotel for the much-touted Wine and Cheese Hour which we have enjoyed in the past. SIgn up on Hospitality Suite door but no one there. We wait a bit and then call the Desk. Response: We don't offer that anymore. Really? Then update the sign that is screwed into the wall and update your website which still advertises it under Services. Just annoying. We decided to have a bottle of wine (a good VQA) from the mini-bar instead. A note on rooms: Clean but showing age, old style TV, no fan in bathroom, bathrooms are small and by no means luxurious. Bed comfy. Not what we consider 'boutique' quality with 'Old World Charm." We did give our feedback on the advertised but non-existent Wine & Cheese hour to the desk clerk when checking out. He comped us the bottle of wine from the mini-bar, a gesture which we appreciated. Bottom line: Yes, we'd stay there again because the location suits our needs, but if asked to recommend it to others, not so sure we would. The Varscona does not live up to its hype.

Room Tip: Free internet if it is working.

“Top service in Edmonton”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 December 2011

My wife and I, along with our 2 kids ages 7 and 10 stayed at Varscona for 2 nights at the end of last September. We were really impressed and have no hesitation recommending it.
Breakfast had an "At home" feel about it rather than a hotel feel.
The pre-dinner drinks and cheese were a really nice touch and again made it easy to talk to other guests and share travel stories.
The valet parking was easy and the car was kept in a locked and secure car park.
The beds were comforatable and the rooms nicely appointed. There was a good spread of restaurant choices all within an easy walk of the hotel.
One of our children left something behind and the hotel sent it to us back in Australia at their cost. I thought this typified the friendly service and it was a great place to spend the last 2 days of our holiday.
Thank you Varscona!

“Great location, would stay here again.”

The Varscona is in a great location. Close to shopping, restuarants, pubs, clubs, and the University Hospital. We were in one of the corner rooms facing Whyte and I was surprised by how soundproof it was, we couldn't hear the partiers coming out of the bars at 2am or the traffic. I especially liked the complimentary valet service. The rooms were clean and well appointed. The common areas might need a bit of revitalization but weren't to bad and the Starbucks in the lobby is a very nice touch. We didn't try the breakfast or wine and cheese tasting but we did order the room service which was quite good. I will definitely be staying here again.

Room Tip: Get a room facing East for great views of Edmonton.

“Great Hotel, great value”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 November 2011

This is a great hotel. It is right on Whyte Avenue and offers great access to shopping, restaurants and pubs. The wine and cheese nightly event, and continental breakfast in the morning truly add to the value. The beds are comfortable and the hotel is quite clean. The staff were very friendly and helpful. No complaints. We would definitely stay again.

Room Tip: Ask for a room that does not face Whyte ave, as they are quieter.

“Love this Hotel, but was a little warm this time.......!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 November 2011

We love this property and stay here often. It is very handy to Whyte Ave. and a great location to pretty much anything you need. However, the room temperture was stiffling!! We finally had two fans brought in, but the room was still very warm........hopefully they figure this out as it can ruin what would have been a fabulous stay!! We do love the hotel, but will rethink before staying again........
