I've stayed in most of the downtown hotels in Edmonton, and the Mac (as it is affectionately known) is one of my favourites, although somewhat pricey for this market. It is well-located downtown in one of the historic Chateau-style buildings to be found across Canada. The interior decor is traditional, conservative, somewhat nostalgic, and could use a bit of an refresh. The somewhat over-priced oak-panelled restaurant has good views of the river valley. Recommended.

My wife and I stayed here in Jan for a small staycation. We booked ahead and got 25% off our room so went with a Grand King with a view. It was a nice room with a large sitting area with a couch and a good view of the river valley. We had friends up for drinks and it was not crowded.

My wife had a hot stone massage which they mixed up a little. They just booked a regular massage instead of a hot stone so had to wait a bit for the stones to heat up. Not a big deal but it did affect our schedule a bit. We adjusted.

The steam room was out of service but the sauna and pools were still open so we used them. Very nice.

Self Park is right next door and is easily walkable with luggage. You can come and go as you need to which is nice.

We did not eat here but had a couple of drinks in the lounge. This is a Fairmont property so be prepared. I had 2 Caesars for $30 (incl tip). We took a look at the menu and it was "standard" Fairmont prices.

My husband and I were visiting good friends in Edmonton over New Year's and after taking a long walk needed some replenishment so our friends suggested the Hotel Macdonald. We sat in the lounge, watching the fire in the beautiful old fireplace, and overlooking the river valley. I had a delicious salad with a very good glass of red wine. It was a perfect setting for our New Year's lunch, so much so that we went back the next day. If you visit Edmonton at any time of year I highly recommend it as a comfortable and pleasurable place to take a break.

My husband and I stayed at the Hotel Mac on New Years Eve to celebrate our anniversary. We were sent an email ahead of time allowing us to check-in. This worked quite well as it only took a few moments to get us our room keys. We found all of the staff to be genuinely friendly and courteous. I appreciated having the door opened for me when getting out of and into the vehicle.
Even though it was New Years eve there was not a lot of noise in the hotel.
The room was OK. It was small but clean. The bed was not very comfortable, but we were only there for one night.
Overall it is a really nice hotel.
