We have two sons that live in Calgary and travel there a few times a year to visit. Usually we stay with them but this time we were in town for a wedding that was in the south end so we decided to get a hotel with a waterslide to make it a bit of a winter get-a-way vacation for our youngest son.
We had a large room with two queen size beds. TVs (with great reception), a microwave, a refrigerator, coffee maker with Wolfgang Puck coffee pods, comfortable beds, climate controls (that are a cinch to use), and lots of lights. An outstanding front desk staff (with the exception of the female on the night shift who was really not happy to be there :-( The remaining staff were wonderful and always had a smile and a hello for us. Our housekeeper was lovely as was "Camille" at the breakfast buffet.
We travel a great deal and have stayed at everything from 1 star motels to 5 start resorts. The Wingate is definitely a do over.
The hotel is a little hard to get to so make sure you know how to get in and out of there in advance to avoid any frustrations.
The hotel has a small gym with treadmill, eliptical trainer, and weights. The pool area has a moderate sized pool, whirlpool, and a big curly waterslide. Pool and gym hours are 6 AM to 10 PM. There was always plenty of fresh towels and a water cooler in the gym. My son had a blast!!
The complimentary breakfast is very nice! It's served in a roomy breakfast area, just off the front lobby, from 6-10 AM weekdays, and 7-11 AM on weekends. It includes hot waffles, make your own hot breakfast sandwiches with eggs and sausage or ham (ham is not recommended!), hard boiled eggs, yogurt, toast with every kind of bread, cereal, skim, whole and 2% milk, fruit, choice of 4 kinds of juice, and coffee. Lovely, clean, and well run.
Just a few steps away from the hotel is the Darby Arms. Go here for a quick bite or a pint of ale. Again, very friendly service and you can order take out if you want to just stay in or in our case because we had children under 18.
For a full restaurant meal, you must go across the street where you'll find a huge array of all the popular restaurants.
Everything including common areas and hallways are very clean and designed for comfort.
Internet is a breeze - link up in your room FREE of charge or use the Business Centre.
There is even a guest laundry with complimentary laundry soap and dryer sheets.
An AVIS rental car agency is also just off the lobby.
This is an extremely good choice for both the leisure traveler or the business person. You will find this hotel both relaxing and comfortable.
We also took in the Zoo for an afternoon and despite it being quite cold it was very enjoyable with lots of indoor exhibits to step in to and warm up.
