I stayed at the hotel twice during December while in Calgary for business. I stayed at this hotel when my preferred area hotel was full.
Front desk staff are quite efficient and courteous. The front desk manager remembered me by name the day that I checked out, even with minimal contact. Check in is very quick yet the staff are happy to answer any questions. Although I didn't partake in 'Happy Hour' because I was in a rush, other hotel guests seemed quite pleased with it... another guest saw me eying the apple cider that was out for Christmas and told me it was quite yummy.
The rooms are comfortable. My king room had a working desk, armchair, flat panel TV and comfortable bed with fresh linen. The washroom was reasonably sized with Neutrogena bath amenities. Shower pressure was respectable and the tub spacious for an average sized person to luxuriate. TV channel listing was decent with multiple cable offerings. I had hoped for Pay per View selections but they aren't available at this hotel. There is a free airport shuttle and he arrived right on time to drive another guest to the Calgary airport.
I didn't partake in the breakfast but there seemed to be numerous other guests enjoying the fare. The room service menu was uninspired but it'd likely satisfy weary travelers in need of a meal.
In comparison with other properties in the area (I've stayed at most of the 2.5 and above selections nearby), the Hilton Garden Inn is in the top tier choices for the area. While staying in the area, I'd rate the Hampton Inn above the Hilton Garden Inn for slightly more independent travelers whom have their own vehicle to go for meals or need a more spacious room. The Garden Inn is a good choice for travelers that want more amenities (and are willing to pay a slightly higher price) but aren't willing to pay 4* prices. The hotel is often full during the week and the prices are higher. Other quality choices in the immediate area are the new Four Points Sheraton (open less than a year), Country Inn and Suites and Holiday Inn Express. I have yet to try the new Courtyard by Marriot which has opened just north of the Holiday Inn Express.
