“Meeting Room Booking”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 February 2012

It's unfortunate, but I feel have to give a negative review...
Please note that I did not stay in the guestrooms - my review is based only on the meeting rooms we booked for our event.

Positive: Planning the event was seamless, and the banquet staff were very helpful and accommodating. I feel like I have to acknowledge their efforts, as some of our problems were out of their control.

Negatives: Our meeting was booked in the only room located directly next to, and below, a construction site. I do not exaggerate when I say that approximately every 5 minutes, we were subject to a loud drilling noise that would go on for about 30 seconds at a time - a problem when your meeting is only an hour, so every second counts. For the last 15 minutes of our meeting, the drilling became continuous, and so loud that we couldn't hear ourselves talking. I approached the front desk staff, who said they would take care of it, but the drilling continued.
We asked numerous times for a coat rack, so our clients would not have to hang their suit jackets on the backs of their chairs, but were not provided with one (there was not any acknowledgement that we had even asked for one).
We then went to a lunch event held in another room (sans construction noise). The room was nicely arranged, and the audio-visual equipment seemed to work fine, but the washrooms were extremely beat up, and a few of the waiters appeared to be ill, coughing on the "make your own sandwich" bar - yikes!

In sum, this hotel is in desparate need of renovations, and the staff seemed to have "given up," which may not be the case if the owners appeared to take pride in their business. I would assume that this attitude also extends to the upkeep of their guestrooms.

“Alright hotel”

Had to go for a class for a weekend in U of C. This hotel is really convenience. It only takes 2 minutes drive to U of C and 12 minutes to Chinook Mall. The staffs were friendly and courteous. They called us to make sure the room was ok. The hotel was located around Denny's, Red Lobsters, MacDonald, and etc. This is the first hotel that i stay that has a microwave in a standard room.
The room needs a renovation, or at least change the furniture. There were black stains on the chairs. There was a underground parking, but it cost additional $10/night for standard rooms. The air condition/heater was pretty load and it is hard to sleep when it is on. The wireless internet was pretty slow, the connection keeps dropping.

“Good price, a bit dated but overall fine.”

Stayed here for 2 weeks on a work trip. In my online booking request I asked for a room as quiet as possible. I was put in a room directly facing the swimming pool. Things were usually quiet by 10pm at night, so it wasn't really an issue. You would think that if you request a quiet room, you wouldn't get put directly opposite the pool though.

As other's have said, the decor is dated. The hotel is nice and clean though, and the bed comfortable. The breakfast is good and the location suitable. The front desk staff were friendly and helpful.

Overall a reasonable hotel for the price.

“You get what you pay for I guess”

I stayed at this hotel and was very displeased by the staff at the hotel. Our key cards didn't work for us the first time around, when we went to the front desk she said they probably didn't work because they got cold...another guest told us how finnicky the doors are and that we needed to go super slow. Why the front desk couldn't tell us that, I'm not sure...

When I checked out, the bill was done up rather ridiculously, I couldn't get a complete bill of charges with a balance of zero which is going to make expensing the hotel at work rather difficult.

When I got home i logged in and checked my credit card, somehow this hotel charged me for an extra room...I called my bank to dispute the charge as I did not even want to attempt to deal with the hotel.

“Great staff, but the hotel needs a refresh.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 December 2011

The best part of this hotel is the staff. They were friendly, attentive and courteous.

The hotel itself is set up with an enclosed courtyard a full five stories high. Pool, lounge and restaurant are in the centre of the ground floor. This is probably quite effective for a Calgary mid-winter. However, this does make the central space overheated on the upper floors as the heat rises. The still humidity and heat make it a little uncomfortable.

Inside the the room, the air conditioning works fine. Each room had outward facing windows and a door which allowed you to step out onto a balcony that wrapped around the hotel. Probably quite pleasant in the summertime. The beds had sheets and a duvet, and I found I had a restless night either too warm or too cool depending on whether I kept the duvet on or off. The rooms are not particularly well insulated for sound, and there was a fair amount of activity in the hall through the evening. Perhaps a number of younger guests (the hotel is next to the university and the stadium) found the tables and chairs on every floor inviting. Mind you, I was still on eastern time, and was turning in earlier than normal.

Water pressure was fine. The only needed repair inside the room (425) was that the sink was draining very slowly. I had intended to mention it to the front desk, but it did not really bother me for the short period of time I stayed, and I had forgotten to do so in the morning.

The restaurant has a limited, but decent menu. You can prepay $10 for a buffet breakfast. That is a pretty good value with a waffle griddle and sweet yoghurt and a variety of canned fruit besides the buffet usuals of scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage and potatoes. The hotel has underground parking, a must for the northern climate. The location is convenient for McMahon stadium. It is probably more convenient to take the north route to and from the airport rather than through town.

Calgary is a fairly expensive city to live in, so the $139 nightly fee before taxes is not unduly expensive, but it is not particularly cheap either for the quality and that it is not quite downtown.
