“Small room but overwise a-ok.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 December 2011

It was my first time at the Alma. The service was friendly. The hotel was clean and well kept. Obviously it's new. Rooms were rather small, especially for a city like Calgary. But they were well appointed with clean bathrooms. They were also very quiet with virtually no hallway or other room noises. It was annoying that you had to park in the U of C parkade because I woke up and the city was covered in snow. I appreciated that I didn't have to clean my rental car off but I hated making even the 3 min trek. Since I have to pay for parking maybe offer to have a valet pick it up for me in those conditions. Otherwise is was a fine place to stay.

“Great value within summer walking distance of the Foothills Hosp and Tom Baker Cancer Center”

The rooms are as advertised and plenty comfortable. I had business at the Fooothills and really appreciated not having to make my way through the one way street maze that is downtown Calgary. Parking is indeed half a block away but it is well lit and there is plenty of foot traffic in the early evening so I did not feel unsafe but I don't think I would like to return alone late at night. It is very reasonable at $8. Front desk service was excellent. I thought phone calls were free meaning they do not charge the unbelievable charge of $1.50 per call (take that big chains) but what they really mean is that you can dial long distance and talk for free. I noticed a washer and dryer on the floor I was on (fifth). This will be my go to hotel when I visit Calgary from now on for personal reasons.

“A very dependable hotel if visiting campus, hospital”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 November 2011

I was surprised to find such a large and professional hotel on campus at the University of Calgary. The room was small but very functional, and the arrival and departure experiences fine. The breakfast was suitable to a business hotel. The reception-area tuck shop had good selection, even for extended stays.

The hotel is located on the west side of U of C, so it's a hike to the C-Train if you want to get downtown, and a longer hike to real restaurants or retail. But is is proximate to the Foothills Hospital and probably quieter than any of the motels in Motel Village.

“Nice Euro-feel right on campus”

This is a nice new hotel situated on the edge of the campus at the University of Calgary.

Great location for visiting scholars. The hotel has a nice Euro-feel to it. The room I had was small, but highly functional. Professional, efficient, service.

“Great University Hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 October 2011

This is a great hotel for visits to the University or immediate surroundings.
The hotel is central in the UofCalgary campus. This means that is it proximal to all the campus facilities (Recreation center, food court, campus shops...) but it is a bit of a hike from downtown. There are plenty of public transport options from the campus, but it takes about 15+min to get downtown.
The hotel itself is part commercial hotel, part short term "res" for student and faculty visitors, this creates an interesting atmosphere, but it was never obtrusive or noisy. The hotel has facilities for term visitors (laundry, lounge rooms, meeting rooms on each floor...) so longer stays should be comfortable enough. The standard rooms are relatively small, but modern and well appointed. The design is trying to be a bit "boutique hotel", but there are some strange design choices (TV to the window side of the bed = reflection?) and the rooms could use a bit more soundproofing from the hallway.
Breakfast in the bistro is a decent cold buffet arrangement, and in the evening the bistro is also a good diner option.
All in all the hotel was clean and comfortable, the staff was professional and friendly, and my stay was enjoyable.

Room Tip: Ask for a room on the 5th or 6th floor at the end of the hall - away from the elevators. The elevat...
