If I was to review this hotel in another city, it would get a lower ranking. But in downtown Calgary, the business class hotels are sadly overwhelmed and they know you are a captive audience and don't need to try as hard. The Westin is no exception - it is fine, I'll probably stay there again, but I'd like them to try a bit harder for the business crowd!
Pros
- great location for business stay - walking distance to businesses in downtown core
- pretty hotel, it looks very nice and is updated
- well rounded breakfast buffet ($25, but included for Platinum members)
- healthy menus for room service
- indoor pool for swimming some (short) laps
- free water bottles for spg preferred guest. Calgary water can taste over-treated at times.
Average
- gym has lots of cardio machines, but older, outdated models and always busy after work. There is one multi-function weight machine that doesn't appear to function.
- while decor is nice, room layout can be odd and hard to work in, for a business travel trying to multi-task (work, watch tv, and eat)
- no turndown, which I don't miss, but would be nice to top off water bottles or towels at times
- heating system was not really adjustable.
- no option for delivery of newspaper to room. just provided at the elevators.
- no business lounge
Cons
- no recycling!! Really? even the motels in eastern Saskatchewan now offers in-room recycling
- gym weightroom is very very small & not well equipped. it felt crowded with 2 people in there. AND, you need to walk through the lobby and up another elevator to get there.
- the usual exhorbitant resort fees (this ISN'T a resort) for internet access of most business hotels. If Starbuck and the above mentioned SK motel can offer wifi for free, why can't business class hotels?
- paper cups for in-room coffee machine. Please give us ceramic!
- humidifiers are provided, but they are impossible to fill using the bathroom faucet orientation!
