“Ignore the rooms, drink in the view, and have some Chinese food!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 December 2011

As most have noted, you do not go here for the rooms. Approaching, it kind of looks like a bus stop and you think "this can't be right." Once inside, it is completely charmless, but the location is nothing short of outstanding. Our room (big with two beds, decent-sized bathroom and okay shower) faced the glacier and it was magnificent, so ask if a view matters to you.

My only brush with "service" was when my husband got a bit dehydrated--the staff was very accommodating and helpful, and even brought him soup from the restaurant. On that note, one nice surprise was the Chinese restaurant. The service was great, and the food was actually very good.

In short, no frills, but the location can't be beat (and I can't imagine there are many other options nearby).

“The location wins it all”

Fantastic location, serene, peaceful and out of the world experience. Friendly staff at hotel and reception. Staff helped us with luggage from the carpark which is not next to the inn. I happened to be traveling to Jasper from banff and decided to take a break at the last minute at the glacier view inn. Took a walk near the glacier after the crowds dwindled away. Our guide for the glacier walk was Ann and she was brilliant.

“Fantastic Location, Staff, and Restaurant.”

Rooms very large including 1 queen, 1 pull out queen sofa bed, and 2 twin beds in an upper spacious loft. All rooms are non smoking and extremely clean. Staff are very friendly and helpful. Daniel at the checkin desk provided excellent advice and was very knowledgeable about the area. Dining room service was great by Alam and Demis. I was suffering from the beginnings of a cold and the 2 waiters voluntarily brought me hot water with honey and lemon slices at every meal. This is a great location at a reasonable price when you book through the internet. It is perfect for a relaxed time to view and take the excursion to the Athabasca Glacier at the Columbia Icefields. Driving to Jasper and back to here is easily done in 1 day with lots of time to take side trips to other points of interest. I would recommend a minimum of 2 nights stay to allow time to see the Glacier and drive to Jasper and back. Overall my wife and I had a great time at this hotel.

Room Tip: Ask for mountain view to save on room price. Consider sharing the generous meals to save funds if so...

“Terrible Service”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 October 2011

The hotel is in a remote location but it helps if you want to take a break from driving and at the same time stop by to look at the Athabasca glacier. The room is clean and the beds are comfortable. There is the view of the glacier but he window is small. Downturn also includes the spring -loaded faucets which is ridiculous for the price we pay. Choice of meal is limited, not ideal and pricey, but I have no complain.

Worse is the poor service and misleading information on the "where" booklet which I founded this hotel. I phoned them 7a.m.toll free from Lake Louise and asked for a room for the night. The lady who answered the phone was courteous, showed me the direction and explained that reserving a room is not necesssary as it was rather quiet, she told me that the room costs $99 per night.

When we arrived at 4:30p.m., we were told that there the rooms costs $120+ for a mountain view and $140+ for a glacier view. Money is not the major problem, we are still willing to pay to look at the glacier but we're really pissed off by the attitude of the receptionist who insisted I made a mistake and called the wrong toll free number, and that there's no room for $99. She made us feel that we're really "cheap" and cannot afford to pay for the room. Her service is totally unacceptable.

Unless it is necessary that you have to break up your journey, I suggest you planned your time well and not spend the night at this hotel and move on either to Jasper or Lake Louise where choices are more available.

“Great Location Amazing View”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 September 2011

This hotel is located across the highway from the Columbia Ice Field. Given how long it took to drive there from Banff (almost 3 hours) and a 2 hour tour on the glacier, the thought of driving all the way back was too much for us to attempt with our 5 month old.

So, instead we chose to come up the night before our tour and then drive one way back to Banff.

The hotel had very mixed reviews, so we went with an open mind and minimal expectations.

It is true that the restaurant prices are very high. We discovered that the restaurant is managed by a separate company. You can't even charge the meals to your hotel room. But the food was very good. The Halibut in Mango salsa was the best I've ever had. Spicy topping the blackened fish which was cooked perfectly.

Breakfast was a little less enticing but hot cereal before climbing a glacier is a good idea.

We had a glacier view room and enjoyed seeing the moon set directly over the glacier and the sun rise and illuminate it in a beautiful orange hue.

The room itself would have comfortably slept 4 with a set of twin beds in the loft and a queen bed down below. The bathroom wasn't very modern but it was clean. The shower heads are very low in this hotel so someone over 6 feet would have the water hitting them in the middle of their back.

There appears to be a new trend in hotels to sandwich the duvet between two sheets rather than use a duvet cover. We experienced this at several hotels during the fall trip. Neither my wife nor I are big fans of this. But the pillows were comfortable and the temperature controls worked in the room.

One major note is that there is no cell phone coverage or internet coverage up here. There are a few computers that provide internet on the Glacier Centre main floor. They cost $2 for 15 minutes.

I think we echo the sentiments of other reviewers when we say, it's pricey but the location is ideal.

Room Tip: Take the glacier view. You've come all this way, you might as well spend the few dollars more an...
