Whitton Lodge is a privately owned B&B property located on the B6039 in the village of Hardstoft just south of Chesterfield. Its location is also a very short drive from junctions 28 & 29 of the M1 yet only about 8 miles from Matlock and the edge of the Peak District.
Please note that if you put Whitton Lodge’s postcode into your Sat Nav you may well be taken down Deep Lane (a turning off the B6039) and away from the Lodge. I would suggest that once you are on the B6039; use The Famous Shoulder Inn as a landmark. The entrance driveway to Whitton Lodge is about 50 meters from the Inn.
Also note that as you proceed up the driveway, the first property you reach is a bungalow which is the proprietors’ private residence. You will need to turn left at that point and continue driving for a further 30 meters or so when you will see a good sized car park and entrance to Whitton Lodge.
The hands-on proprietors, Kim and John, have done an excellent job of offering modern, spacious accommodation, including a fully functional gym, a full-size snooker table and sauna room on the ground floor of the Lodge.
The Lodge has ten bedrooms; each one tastefully decorated with modern furniture and fittings. My partner and I stayed in the Luxury Suite Double Room, which had a double bed, a corner sofa that converted to a double bed and a folding single bed! Even with so much furniture the room was very spacious and included a Freeeview LCD TV on one of the walls and complimentary tea & coffee making facilities. The en-suite bathroom had a generous sized bath with a shower unit above the bath. Toiletries and bath robes were also provided.
Each evening we were given an order form for the following day’s breakfast. This ensured that the hot breakfast that was ordered by each resident was freshly cooked and brought to the table once the resident(s) were seated at a table in the dining room and the first course (e.g. cereal, fruit, yoghurt, toast...) had been eaten. The hot breakfast choices were impressive and included any combination of bacon, sausages, eggs, tomatoes, baked beans, mushrooms, fried bread and black pudding.
We stayed for two nights and used Whitton Lodge as a base for exploring a few towns in the Peak District, such as Matlock, Bakewell and Buxton. Unfortunately time constraints prevented us from staying for a longer period, but we made the best of the time we had and thoroughly enjoyed staying at Whitton Lodge and exploring the nearby area.
I would highly recommend Whitton Lodge; not least because it proved to be very good value for money.
