“Avoid the Mocambo”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 January 2009

The Mocambo may have more history than the other hotels in Boca del Rio (which is five or six miles to the south of downtown Veracruz), but the service in this hotel is lacking considering the price you pay (about 100 dollars per night or more). It is clear that the owners of the place have decided to cut costs and avoid renovation. This is too bad given that the hotel dates from the 1930s (which is what attracted us to stay here in the first place).

The breakfast buffet was OK, but not great. (Its much better at the nearby Crowne Plaza.) Some of the morning waiters are a bit surly. Unlike every other hotel that offers a free breakfast, kids are charged for their meals, from age 1 on up. In contrast, the afternoon and evening service and food was excellent at the hotel's restuarant. Get the shrimp ceviche!

Room service was generally pretty good and fast during our stay. The hotel store, located in the lobby, has irregular hours and a limited selection of sunscreen and lotions.

The rooms were very sparsely furnished for a hotel of this category. The only rooms that are worth it, really, are 401-410 and 501-510. These have private balconies with spectacular views of the beach. Otherwise, you are better off paying less money at the numerous other hotels in this part of Veracruz city(Boca del Rio).

The hotel has two indoor (heated) and two outdoor (not-heated) swimming pools. It looks like these haven't been painted since the 1970s. The girl who issues towels for hotel guests using the pools could benefit from a course in charm school. Moreover, during our weeklong stay, she never had enough towels for the small number of guests who used the pools. We constantly heard other guests complain about this, too. (In other hotels in the area, this never seems to be a problem.)

The Mocambo beach neaby is OK, probably better than average as far as Veracruz city beaches go. There is an excellent waterslide park steps away from the hotel, which is a plus if you have kids. Of course, you don't need to stay at the Mocambo hotel to go to this beach or water park.

If you want comfort and good service, stay elsewhere--there are plenty of other options in Boca del Rio, Veracruz.

  • Liked — The view from our balcony (only a few rooms have this, though)
  • Disliked — the lack of care for the building, the surly staff (some, not all), and the price

Hotel Mocambo veracruz Fernando Bueno Dir. Gral.

“Old style”

I stayed here for 3 nights in November, 2007. I was in town for a conference at the WTC and this place was a perfect location nearby. The breakfast buffet is a great deal and the food was tasty. If you don't want a buffet, there are many restaurants a short walk away.

It is a bit older, but there is something charming about it. I had a room as far away as you could get from the entrance!! However, it was quiet, clean and served its purpose. There were even a few stations on the TV in English and I was able to enjoy movies in the evenings. Bottled water was provided each day.

There is an outdoor and indoor pool, as well as a hot tub and sauna. Massages are also available. The beach in Veracruz just isn't that great in my opinion, but there's access if you're so inclined.

The prices aren't too bad and it's a charming place with a nice restaurant and bar. I would recommend it.

  • Liked — Quiet rooms.
  • Disliked — Many, many stairs to get to my room!

“Romantic even with kids”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 July 2007

We stayed at this hotel for 3 days and were impressed by the romantic
vistas, traditional style, and even the food in the restaurant, which
is good and half the price of most hotel fair. If you get a room with
a view of the sea, you are better off. They are clean and neat if somewhat spartan. The staff is friendly but with some bureaucratic twitches that, combined with the frayed decor in places, might make you think you are in Havana. The pool could be in better shape, but the slide for young kids makes up for it. And there is a water park only steps away for kids who want even bigger slides. If your are lucky, there may be a wedding at the hotel and you can get free entertainment while you watch the lights in the harbour and enjoy the soft gulf breeze. And there is cable TV for the kids (in Spanish)
who have doubtless enjoyed the acuario and forts earlier in the day. The beach in front of the hotel isn't worth much, but take a boat ride to the reefs from the Malecon in town (90 pesos) and you will be shocked to have crystal clear water for swimming and snorkling only 10 minutes from the beach. The Mocamobo isn't for those who want 5 star luxury, but it a unique and pleasurable experience and romantic, even with kids.

“Bad experience”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 February 2006

We stayed in this hotel from Feb. 4th - 7th, 2006. We will stay again only if the other option we have is to stay in the streets.

The hotel has not been taken care of for many years, there is mildew all over the place, food was not good, waitress did not give good service, lack of Management, staff is not trained as to give a good service, rooms poorly decorated and taken care of, dirty all over, mades were like hitting on staff there level, almost like making out... outside our room and we heard what they said to each other, we felt as homeless asking for bed and food. The whole Hotel including pools, gym, SPA, Restaurants, Reception have not been painted for years. The Hotel might have been pretty once but today its a disaster. Thank god we only had to sleep there, so we would get there late at night and leave early in in the morning.

I send this review because even though I did not make my reservation through you, I did get the idea in this page and called directly, because we decide to go tight away. I got to see other rooms, and they were all the same. A MESS!!!
I've attached the only picture I have that Im not on htem, the other ones I appear on them.

Thank you.

“Pretty grounds, great atmosphere and super friendly staff, plus a spa!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 June 2005

When we arrived at Hotel Mocambo after an all night bus ride, our room was ready and waiting and the front desk promptly checked us in and had a bellman escort us to our room as dawn was breaking. A gorgeous sunrise view was our reward, along with black out curtains that let our sleep deprived bodies happy! Each morning, room service delivered great coffee for which the region is known and fresh orange juice in record time, according to US standards. For two days we strolled the lovely grounds, soaked in one of two pools in the Roman-style spa, took saunas, had a foot massage and wandered the beach in front of our hotel. Staff were extremely efficient and exchanged money, provided maps, directions, tips, etc. and even found a rental car for under $50 per day (wehich was no easy feat where commerce and tourism mingle in the pretty port city. ) Buses ran directly in front of the hotel to and from downtown, the malecon (oceanfront boulevard) and the fun-filled zocalo (the main town square). All in all - a great mid-sized hotel in an ideal location and perfect for couiples, famiy vacations (lots of children's areas and programs) and special events like weddings or corporate gatherings. Highly recommended.
