On the last leg of our trip through Colonial Mexico, my husband and I made an overnight stop in Leon before flying back home. We figured it was the "convenient" thing to do since we had already spent several days in Guanajuato and wanted to see the leather shops in Leon. Based on the only review posted for this hotel ( many of the reviews I have read of other cities and hotels have been very helpful and accurate in the past), I decided on this hotel. BIG BIG BIG mistake.

First of all, Leon is an industrial city which has NONE of the charm of the other cities in the region. Tthe center of the town, unlike the others I visited ,is UGLY and dirty. The bus stop and leather/shoe district is quite a distance from the center. The cab ride from there to this area was the most expensive in the region.

Second of all, I knew that the hotel was a budget hotel, but did not expect to sacrifice cleanliness at this rate. At about 4 in the morning, we were rudely awakened by the overpowering stench of sewage coming out of the air vent. We decided to leave to the airport 5 hours before our flight left because of the smell. We complained to the night "manager" whom we woke up as he slept on the couch in the lobby. He claimed the smell came from the streets but it did not smell outside.

HORRIBLE!! Stay Away!!!! If you want to shop in Leon, do it early so you can head back to Guanajuato at night.

This hotel was right next to the zocalo (as you see in my pictures). Friendly hotel staff, clean room & bathroom. Hotel was under some reconstruction so the hallways had cement dust, etc. TV with plenty of channels (in Spanish). The connected restaurant was great for the lunch buffets! Great food & good price. Complimentary breakfast is free though only toast & coffee. Not sure if I was supposed to ride the elevator to the top to take the pics from the roof--but I did.
If I had to find something to complain about, it'd be that the bathroom was enclosed as opposed to having a window to the outside meaning if you open the window, your steam (and anything you say or sing) travels through the windows into the very nearby bathroom of your neighbor's room.
I'd stay here again. Or I'd at least eat the awesome lunch buffet while in Leon. Do a search and then find & check out the hotel's website.

  • Liked — Very centrally located (near sights, restaurants, etc.)
  • Disliked — N/A
  • Any tips/secrets for future travellers? — Check out the lunch buffet, go see the freaky Expiatorio's cripts!
