I stayed at the Howard Johnson's Hotel Condesa in Leon, Leon, MX for three days spanning the last of October to the beginning of November, 2002. I liked the room , the price was right, the staff was courteous. I enjoyed strolling in the plaza behind the hotel and checking out the restaurants. There is a museum with some Diego Rivera artwork across the courtyard, which is quite large by the way. I enjoyed watching people stroll the plaza. The night I got there it was late and the restaurants were closed. I did find a vendor of bacon wrapped hot dogs at the corner of the plaza that is out the back entrance and to the right. They were the tastiest hot dogs I have ever had!Leon has more shoe stores and leather stores than you will ever see anywhere else. That is because it is where most of the leather goods for all of Mexico are made. Prices are very good, especially with exchange rate taken into account. The one blot on my stay there was that when I arrived home and got my credit card bill in the mail, I noticed a series of credit and debits on my account. It appeared that someone in the office at the hotel had played games with my credit card, adding and taking away various amounts. I think the objective was to make it confusing for me, the card holder, to decipher whether or not I was cheated.I would stay in the Hotel Condesa again. The price now is even better than when I was there last since the exchange rate has improved. There are other hotels nearby that are less expensive but they do not appear in the online reservation system. You could check them out once you arrive. But I would take some precautions, maybe pay in cash or use a card that I could monitor online to see daily debits. There are internet cafes nearby to facilitate this.
