We travel in Mexico a lot, We like hotels that have character, where the staff is friendly and helpful, that are clean, that have plenty of hot water, and that have reading lights for the beds. We prefer to be in the historic centers. We do not require the latest in American- style facilities or conveniences. Great character and cool places to stay are key to us. The Posada Mariquinta in Xalapa was a total winner for us. It is located in an old colonial home with a lovely garden court around which additions containing guest rooms have been added. Also, the Posada has the building next door, with additional rooms. Staff was very friendly and helpful. Rooms are spacious and nicely appointed with a big closet, sideboard for unpacking/storing things, and a table and chairs and a refrigerator! Our room had French doors opening on to a small balcony overlooking the city. The bath was compact with good hot water (but low flow). It is in a terrific location two blocks from the main drag -Zamorra, four blocks from the Parque Juarez and central to most everything one might want to see in Xalapa.
