Spent a week at the Maria Isabel while doing some work for the University of Colima. I speak fluent spanish but my wife speaks very little. This was a very nice stay for both of us. It is right across the street from the University, with a lovely campus to walk around in, if you want to get in a little exercise. (about a block away there is a small river with a sidewalk around much of it where locals walk and a park where neighbors do aerobics every morning.
The best feature of the hotel is its outstanding pool. Talked to many people - both locals and expats who say that this is the best pool in Colima. The restaurant is good and fairly priced. The service is OK, but not superb, however, room service, maid service, maintenance were all top-notch. A modest but reasonable selection of traditional dishes are served, but just down the main avenue - within easy walking distance is a very good array of tradittional restaurants. I reccomend the "Jugo" for breakfast.
The rooms are very clean, great water pressure in the showers, Beds are hard at first, but we slept great.
Most of the front desk staff speak reasonably good English if you need it. This is not an American Tourist Hotel, rather a very nice hotel that Mexican vacationers, and business men stay at. Try to stay away from the 700 series rooms as the people who come very early in the morning to work out at the gym park in front of these rooms and always close their cars with the "beep" of the security system and talk to each other in the parking lot. This starts around 6:30 AM. All the other rooms are quieter.
While I worked, my wife was the lady of leisure at the pool and had a marvelous time eating and drinking by the pool and working on her computer with the very good wireless internet that covers the whole hotel.
All in all, a very good 4 star hotel, reasonably priced, nice location, and a great pool.
