For some reason, which at first we did not understand, the Hotel Ceballos did there best to get us to go away. First, as we were already underway on our travels we received an e-mail demanding that we deposit $1,000 in the hotel's BanaMex account that day, or our previously confirmed reservation would be cancelled. Fortunately (?) we intercepted that e-mail in an Internet cafe in Guadalajara, next door to a BanaMex branch, and were able to comply with that demand.
We arrived at the hotel late on the appointed afternoon. First, having been assured that all of the hotel's rooms contained two beds, we were shown to a closet at the end of a long hall, containing a single small bed completely unsuitable for two aging adults. When we threatened to spend the night on a couch in the lobby instead we were shown to a more satisfactory room, but told that we might use that room for only one night, as the conference would be arriving the next day.
Aha! That's it. The hotel can make more money from that room selling it to the conference than by honoring their commitment to us. We were only too happy to comply.
There is little left of architectural or cultural interest in Colima. The hotel provides adequate breakfast facility, but no good place for dinner and we could not find a good restaurant in the area. The New York Times calls the Hotel Ceballos "The place to stay in Colima," and as far as we could tell that is correct. That being the case, unless you have a conference to attend we suggest that you simply skip Colima.
