We stayed Vista de Playa de Oro for 6 days. My initial impression was we had made a bad choice. The first day we arrived was a Sunday and the resort was still crowded with local, Mexican, families. The pool was crowded, noisy and there was an odor of urine at the pool. The next day we were moved up to a spacious room a beautiful view of the bay and a balcony to sit and relax. There is an upper pool that was clean, quiet and had a bar. We almost had it all to ourselves. The drinks flowed freely. The food in the buffets was very good and plentiful. After my first impression I started enjoying the funkiness of the place. A pirate ship in the pool with cannons shooting water, Davy Jones in the lobby to name a few of things.
The rooms were very clean, each room had bottled water. Yes there were just 2 towels in the rooms but there were beach towels to take to the pool.
We took the bus into Manzanillo and walked around the downtown and saw a giant statue of a sailfish near the harbor. It had to be 80 feet high. Not too much to see in town. We did take a tour to Colima to see the ruins and volcano. It was an all day trip and it was interesting and we enjoyed our tour guide. There were 4 of us in an airconditioned SUV.
Across the street from the hotel was a nice resturuant that was part of the hotel. It was very nice sitting out over the bay watching the pelicans diving for fish and watching the sun setting
George the hotel social director was as good as the reviews mentioned. He not only helped us book the tour, he upgraded our room and made sure we hooked up with friends that were
meeting. He was wonderful.
A few things I wished I had known.
This place doesn't take credit cards and the tour used most of my avalible cash.
I wished we had tipped the staff daily leaving small amount at meals and for our maids. When we were leaving and thought about tips we realized the people who waited on us were different each day and it seemed unfair to leave a bigger tip on the last day.
We got upgraded to a nicer room for no additional cost.
There is a truck that take you up to the rooms higher up on resort. You don't have to hike up the hill.
I wish I had a flashlight for seeing better at night the terrain is uneven and it would have been very helpful.
The hotel looked so pretty against the hills of the bay. It felt like we were in Greece at Santorino.
The place really grew on us and I would return again. It was a real bargain.
