“Great Best Kept Secret”

Cholla Bay in Puerto Penasco, Mexico did not conjure up very good images for me. I had been to Rocky Point and my impression was that Cholla Bay would be a dusty dirty little village full of rowdy people. Absolutely not so.

Cholla Bay is lovely, the little town is quite charming, and Casa Monica is an absolute FIND! We found Casa Monica on the internet, had family in town, and decided to embark on the adventure. We were more than pleased.

Casa Monica is a lovely home - owned by a local American real estate agent. She has lived in Cholla Bay for many years and is a wonderful source of information, a great cook, hospitable host, and has one of the best houses in the area. She has a beautiful and friendly chocolate standard poodle, who was always more than happy to talk a walk with us out to the bay at sunset.

We rented the upstairs unit for all of us and found it to be bright, cheery, decorated with all the colorful Mexican flair that one would expect, and a view that will blow you away. The bay is one of the few bays in the world that completely empties at low tide. You can walk out for what seems to be miles on the beautiful white rippled sand and dig for clams or just enjoy the view of the beautiful turquoise sea as it recedes.

The neighbors next door have a big golden retriever. We watched him daily walk out into the bay before the tide went out and simply sit there and soak for hours. He came out only for a potty break or to snack. Sounds like he has learned to chill out in true south of the border style. We just loved it here!

The accommodations, food, and hospitality made us feel right at home - HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

“very chilled out”

we headed here after a few days in Phoenix, what a contrast. Choya Bay is a great place to relax after the horrible urban sprawl of Phoenix(sorry very souless place - no redeeming features).
After a fantastic breakfast of fresh fruits, french toast, amazing potatoes, egg which tasted like eggs used to taste, we walked across the bay when the tide was out. The village has everything you need for a quiet break; cold beers in JJ's and tacos in Mr Fish. Simple pleasures. Glad we were not in those hideous condos developments on the other beach.
We ventured into PP which was a lot less developed than I had imagined. The only thing was the resort seemed to close at 10pm which meant we missed dinner on the first night. I was expecting the same dinner hours as Spain. We did go back to the port area in PP for lunch. All the places look quite touristy but the food was good- oysters, shrimp, guacamole, margaritas etc etc
I am almost reluctant to recommend this place as want to keep it my secret but everyone deserves a great nights sleep and fab breakfast! Gretchen is a fine host and we felt like house guests rather than customers! The cat was really cuddly and the poodles very curious!

This is better than a 4 star resort. It feels like home the minute you step foot on the property!!!! Gretchen is a wonderful host and the food and lodging are a+!! What a beautiful location & clean and comfortable rooms! If you are planning a trip to Puerto Penasco this is defiantly the place to stay. Walking distance from JJ’s and steps from the beach. You have my word!!!

“Best Place Ever!!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 October 2005

My family stayed at the Casa Monica B&B in Cholla (or Choya) Bay Oct of 2005. What a place!! We found it totally by pure dumb luck, searching for a place to stay on a whim and saw the sign, stopped to ask about vacancy and we are now permanently hooked!
Cost is $95 per night per bedroom, with a 2 night min stay, the whole place for $190 per night. It's a small place with 2 bedrooms, room for six I believe. It's right on the beach, with the most scenic views. The morning was gorgeous, with the sunrise over the bay visible on our balcony which is also huge. The owner, Gretchen, was SO nice, very accomodating and a GREAT cook for breakfast, served at about 8:30. Try not to be late, since it's just her cooking (reminded me of mom's house). We have three kids, and this is by far one of the better places we've ever stayed on any of our travels. Not a place for college-kid type parties as it's really quiet and just amazing. It's all about relaxing here. I felt totally at home in this place.
When the tide is low, go out on the now-drier bay to see the trillions of hermit crabs and look for shells. Going all the way to the water line, about 2.5 km out at low tide will yield HUGE sand dollars and all kinds of neat sea life. Bring a marine biology book if you're into that and you'll be amazed at what you find in the bay at the different tide levels. When the tide is high, pull out the kayak she has for you, put it in the water 20 feet from the back door and paddle out to look at fish
The beach is in a residential stretch, so it's great for families. go down to the Mr. Fish Taco and eat to your heart's content. Really good food there, small local stand. Then go have a drink at JJ's next door.
Gretchen doesn't really employ a staff, although she does have some help with things so it's nice to be considerate like not wasting water. One other thing...she takes only cash or a good check, no credit cards. Overhead costs, I'd assume but hey, a small price for such a spot. I've already got all my vacations reserved for the next year.
In short, this is a spot for those wishing to just decompress for a time, feeling like you are staying with your friend who takes care of you. Not for the loud, rude, obnoxious or large numbers of people looking to behave drunk and disorderly...go down to the main part for all that. Again, it's like staying at mom's house but with a KILLER view!
