My sisters, mom and a 1 1/2 yo neice stayed here for two nights in Oct. It was an absolutely wonderful time. Our room was clean, with fantastic views and a spacious balcony. The first evening we ventured just beyond the gate to a bar called La Changa, or something like that. It has a thatch roof. AVOID this place. It was dreadful. No matter how hungry you are go elsewhere. I'm not sure how you can ruin mexican food but they did and we had to wait nearly an hour which is not easy with baby. The second day we ventured into Old Port. I don't really get why anyone would want to go there. From the moment we stepped out of our car we were hassled by people trying to sell us something. I know they are just trying to make a living but it was not my idea of fun. Pretty much every store front had the same junk for sale. We stayed an hour and decided if we really needed something we could buy it from the vendors on the beach. We went back to the resort and were on the beach by 11:00. We stayed out there until 6pm and then hit the hot tub. I would recommend the tacos at the swim up bar at happy hour. They were delicious. We ate them for lunch and dinner! My sisters and I also did the banana boat ride (they negotiate price). We have never laughed so hard, it was sooooo much fun. If we stayed longer we would have done jet skis the next day.
The sand is super clean, and you can bring your beer or whatever you drink down to the beach. I think you can bring it to the pools, just not in glass. We brought our pitcher of Margaritas down to the hot tub. I also noticed a section where there were grills so you could bring your own meat to grill if you wanted. If we return, we will bring our own food and stay on the premises, hit the happy hour tacos but not venture out. For us, the stress of being in a foreign country, not speaking the language and dealing with the very CRAZY drivers was not worth venturing out. Everything we were looking for was at the resort. We were there to relax. One WARNING - there are many stop signs and they are extremely hard to see. Sometimes they are on the left, next time the right, sometimes behind a tree.
Overall, this is a great place. Clean, well maintained, friendly staff. Not worth the LONG drive from Phoenix unless you can stay several days. It took us 4.5 hours from Phoenix driving the speed limit through Mexico. Although many around us were flying through Mexico, we did not feel we wanted to risk being pulled over. It was also very loud our second night. Lots of partys. If you are looking for a family time I would avoid spring break weeks.
