“Never again - not here anyways”

Rocky Point is still a great place, great value, beautiful area. The Sonoran Spa is a huge disappointment regarding service, comfort, and value.

We booked a specific unit, top floor with enlarged balcony. When we checked in, we were told the unit was "unavailable due to renovation" and were given a different unit, mid level. Now we had to deal with noisy upstairs people and barking dogs next door (it clearly states "no pets" in the information on the rental website, and in the in-room informational binder).

The little convenience store on site was only open when they felt like it (couple hours every other morning) so you had to go to town to get what you needed (which I'd rather do anyways - the local merchants are friendly) The street vendors are a little bold, but that adds to the flavor in my opinion.

The unit has two large sliding glass doors to really open up the space - if you could open them. They were so bad I had to my 210lbs. into them to open them, my 120lb wife - not a chance. I went down to see about service, and also noted that the MBR TV remote was missing, and they said they would send someone up later. They sent a poor kid that didn't speak english and was clueless how to operate a remote, let alone fix a huge patio door. He came back with a screwdriver and 4 new wheels - but it would take 2 strong people to repair the door (I know - I'm was in the business and would have helped if I had any tools).

The place was clean, but just lot's of clues that this is one of the oldest properties on Sandy Beach. The on-site staff do their best but with no authority to back them up, they can usually just shrug and you're stuck with what they give/tell you.

Pay a couple bucks more and get a better place on Sandy Beach - the Sonoroan Spa isn't worth the money.

“Going downhill fast...”

What was once such a beautiful resort is rapidly turning into a waste of beachfront property. We stayed in a privately owned condo that had two bedrooms and 2 baths. The condo itself was pretty decent. The resort however, has taken to allowing 'day use' to local families. They also bus in overnighters from who knows where but they have no pride of ownership and it shows. The pool is overpopulated from sun-up to sundown, noisy, screaming kids, crying babies, and overfilled garbage containers. From our balcony (5th floor) it was so noisy we had to stay inside until after the pool closed. The 'overnighters' filled their rooms to over capacity and many had people sleeping on the balconies. Children ran up and down the halls without parental supervision most all the time day and night. Maybe it's the state of the economy that has led the management to fill this resort by whatever means possible BUT if I were an owner, I would be upset to see my investment being trashed this way. The little store on the property is grossly overpriced so going into town is definately worth the trip. Their is no towel service by the pool or beverage service. We used to visit Rocky Pointe several times a year to enjoy the beach and buy seafood at the seafood markets. Although this trip we were so disappointed with the conditions of the resort that "IF" we go back it will be a day-trip for the seafood only.

“Review of stay in June of 2005”

We stayed at the Sonoran Spa many times when we lived in PHX, AZ. Recently we moved and discovered this site. Without going into a ton of details our room was robbed while staying at the Sonoran Spa 2 wedding rings and about $500 cash was taken from our friends and ourselves. Hotel managment did their best to try and accomidate however the rings and cash was never recovered. ..That being said.

This is a very clean and very nice resort in Rocky Point. The staff was very helpfull on our 4 prior visits and even with one bad and I do mean very bad experience, We would stay their again if we were in the area.

“Great time at Sonora Spa!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 October 2009

Just returned from a week at the Sonoran Spa Resort -- it was outstanding and a great value. I've traveled to Rocky Point many times over the past 30 years, but this was my first time to stay at one of the resorts. We called the number from the Sonora-spa.com web site and got the buy 4, get 2 days free deal. My wife was a bit concerned about a 'resort' in Rocky Point, but the rooms were spacious (we had E203), clean and have a great view of the ocean. She was thrilled by the view and how nice the place was -- full kitchen and washer / dryer. The weather in October is perfect and we really hated to leave the place. We did have a leaky sink, so we called the front desk and they sent a maint guy up in 10 minutes and he fixed everything. The few employees were very friendly and seemed to be constantly busy working on the grounds, etc.

The only compliant was that Friday night a beer vendor came in and had a DJ blasting music until after 11pm. We closed the windows and turned on the bath fan and it made it at least possible to sleep.

All in all, this place has great views, good location, clean and spacious rooms and (currently) is a great value for your dollar. We have 4 adults and 2 small kids in a 2 bedroom that cost us $750 for the week! We are already planning to return.

Things to know:
1. There is NO shade on the beach, so bring one of those 10'x10' collapsable shade canopies - lots of people just leave them out for the entire week w/out problems

2. The folks who rent the kayaks ALWAYS say that they are all rented for reasons unknown. They claim they were reserved, but w/out any specific times. We pointed out on 2 occasions that there were a number of available kayaks on the beach (8 in fact) and then suddenly they change the story and they now say there are no paddles. If you ask them to check, suddenly there are paddles and you are good to go. Crazy, but it worked both times.

3. Avoid using the little store at the resort, they give a poor exchange rate and their prices are about 2x what you can get at the Super-Ley market (on Consitution ave).

4. Be VERY careful of fishing trips -- we booked one down at the marina (the Luis I) and the boat was very slow and didn't go out as far as we were told. They say '4-6 hours', but that means 2 hours of travel and 2 hours of fishing. Ask for specifics when booking a boat, like how far out will they go, just to pelican point or further out? Check out the condition of the boat, do they have a GPS, is the prop on the boat missing big chunks (and hence can be run at speed), etc

5. The vendors have gotten much more aggressive lately; when we parked our car to go fishing, a man decided he would wash it for us (without us knowing he was doing it) and then wanted $10 dollars for smearing muddy water all over our car. When I gave him $3 he got angry and was shouting and us and making a scene. Later, we had some kids who did the usual window washing thing at a stoplight attempt to grab change from our center console of the van after we already paid them. The nice thing is Sonoran Spa has security around and the vendors on the beach were numerous, but polite (so we bought ice cream, hats, kites, sunglasses, etc from them).

6. The bottom floor seems to be the party row; the 2nd night the people in E103 played loud music and sat on their patio shouting and singing to the music. Security came by and they quieted down for a few minutes, but were back at it once security had walked away. Higher up might avoid the noise if you go to be before 11pm.

“The Best Family Vacation Possible!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 October 2009

We just got back from an 8 day stay at Sonoran Spa W608 and the worst part of the trip was coming home! We have two kids (7 and 5 yrs old) and we all had such a good time! The condo itself was perfectly outfitted (this is the third time we have stayed in it) - it has everything - dishes, pots, pans, all cooking utensils, tupperware, iron/ironing board, washer, dryer, board games, videos, TV's in both bedrooms and the living room, great patio furniture and the most unbelievable balcony view of the ocean and pool. It's on the sixth floor so we weren't too close to the noise of the pool but it was 2 minutes from the condo to a pool or beach chair. There is a spa, gym, restaurant and convenience store on the property and the staff is so nice and helpful. You can access their wireless internet from the lobby and they have 2 computers for guests in the gym area as well. The security is so outstanding, we left our pop-up tent on the beach the entire week - never took it down. We haven't been back 24 hours and are planning our next stay. I can't recommend this highly enough!
