“No Worries in Rocky Point”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 October 2011

A great escape for the $$$ -- driving into Mexico was not a problem at all. The Spa may not be a 5 star resort but nothing is in Rocky Point, thats what makes it the little fishing town that it is. There are no big hotel chains- except for a few timeshares. So value for a family trip in a 2 bedroom top floor condo was a great, great value for us. Look at the condos on line and choose the one you like. Many are up dated and a little more $, otherwise you get what you paid for. The shrimp in town are the best we have ever had- fresh and gigantic. Sandy Beach is clean and there are not to many vendors to bother you. We will be back our kids love it there- and so do we..

Room Tip: Review pictures and views from condo on line- we liked the East tower views the best top floor, the...

“Would not stay here again”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 September 2011

My buddy booked this before we could read the last 2 reviews. We went down with a open mind but it was clear when we pulled up that they are not taking care of the place. The paint was and finish is fading away and filthy in some places. They had one person checking people in during a Labor day weekend and a line started to form. We got to the room and the AC was off. Was so freaking humid it didn't make since. Noticed the base boards were dirty and just the overall cleanliness of the place was far below hotel standards. Everything was dingy. E401 is a good unit but like I said the place is showing its age and they don't clean to well. Stayed at Sonoran Sun and it was a night and day experience. It appears that only local families stay here besides the people that own and live there. One review mentioned this also. I would say that the was 80% local and 20% American. The batteries went out to the AC unit and I had to get service for that one day. The convenient store was closed most of the day and never open on time. The coffee store guy next to it laughed and said he should be there. The front desk girl was complaining that her shift was over and the other person was late.

“Rent at your own risk”

My family has made many trips to Rocky Point during the past 15 years, and all of our visits for the past nine years have been spent at the Sonoran Spa Resort.

However, we have made our last visit to the Spa. The three bedroom unit we rented for a week this past May was shabby, smelly, infested with cockroaches, had a non-functioning air conditioner, had large sliding glass doors that required Herculean strength to open due to lack of roller maintenance, and the metal screen security door was caked with rust.

While the place appeared to be well guarded, front desk service and assistance was non-existent as were any type of amenities that are to be expected at a 'resort'. In addition to the rental fees, there is an extra charge for 'cleaning'. Not once during our entire stay did we ever SEE a housekeeper, much less receive any such service. The linens and bath towels provided were thread bare, and only one bath towel was allocated for each adult in the unit ~ forget any towels for children. I suppose we were supposed to wash the towels as needed, but that required a trip to a local store for detergent. And, yes, there was a "tip" envelope in the unit. Unbelievable.

Speaking of stores ~ on the property is a small convenience store which I suppose would be convenient if it were ever open. In spite of the store hours being posted, the store was closed 90% of the time we were there. It was open sporadically during several afternoons only. There is also supposed to be a 'guest services' area where kayaks, rafts, and beach toys can be rented, plus fishing excursions and sunset cruises can be booked. Again, this 'service' was not available to us during our week's stay.

The privately owned spa services and restaurant are not part of this review. In checking the spa menu we girls determined the services offered were overpriced, and as a family we were warned by other renters to avoid the Grille and drive into town for our meals out.

In my family's opinion, Sandy Beach remains the best beach in the world and the Spa pool and grounds are maintained and family friendly. It is the management of the complex that needs to be better monitored by the powers that be, and the individual owners of the rental units should be held accountable for the comfort and cleanliness of their properties.

“Never again - not here anyways”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 December 2010

Rocky Point is still a great place, great value, beautiful area. The Sonoran Spa is a huge disappointment regarding service, comfort, and value.

We booked a specific unit, top floor with enlarged balcony. When we checked in, we were told the unit was "unavailable due to renovation" and were given a different unit, mid level. Now we had to deal with noisy upstairs people and barking dogs next door (it clearly states "no pets" in the information on the rental website, and in the in-room informational binder).

The little convenience store on site was only open when they felt like it (couple hours every other morning) so you had to go to town to get what you needed (which I'd rather do anyways - the local merchants are friendly) The street vendors are a little bold, but that adds to the flavor in my opinion.

The unit has two large sliding glass doors to really open up the space - if you could open them. They were so bad I had to my 210lbs. into them to open them, my 120lb wife - not a chance. I went down to see about service, and also noted that the MBR TV remote was missing, and they said they would send someone up later. They sent a poor kid that didn't speak english and was clueless how to operate a remote, let alone fix a huge patio door. He came back with a screwdriver and 4 new wheels - but it would take 2 strong people to repair the door (I know - I'm was in the business and would have helped if I had any tools).

The place was clean, but just lot's of clues that this is one of the oldest properties on Sandy Beach. The on-site staff do their best but with no authority to back them up, they can usually just shrug and you're stuck with what they give/tell you.

Pay a couple bucks more and get a better place on Sandy Beach - the Sonoroan Spa isn't worth the money.

“Going downhill fast...”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 September 2010

What was once such a beautiful resort is rapidly turning into a waste of beachfront property. We stayed in a privately owned condo that had two bedrooms and 2 baths. The condo itself was pretty decent. The resort however, has taken to allowing 'day use' to local families. They also bus in overnighters from who knows where but they have no pride of ownership and it shows. The pool is overpopulated from sun-up to sundown, noisy, screaming kids, crying babies, and overfilled garbage containers. From our balcony (5th floor) it was so noisy we had to stay inside until after the pool closed. The 'overnighters' filled their rooms to over capacity and many had people sleeping on the balconies. Children ran up and down the halls without parental supervision most all the time day and night. Maybe it's the state of the economy that has led the management to fill this resort by whatever means possible BUT if I were an owner, I would be upset to see my investment being trashed this way. The little store on the property is grossly overpriced so going into town is definately worth the trip. Their is no towel service by the pool or beverage service. We used to visit Rocky Pointe several times a year to enjoy the beach and buy seafood at the seafood markets. Although this trip we were so disappointed with the conditions of the resort that "IF" we go back it will be a day-trip for the seafood only.
