My husband I and arived for our first visit (and our honeymoon!) in Puerto Penasco Mexico on Wednesday, July 12 and checked out on Monday, July 17, 2006. We had the most wonderful time! We stayed on the beach at the Playa Bonita Resort hotel. The restaurant there offered a breakfast buffet every morning. The cost was $6.50 each M-F and $7.50 each Sat & Sun. Well worth it! Fresh squeezed orange juice, eggs to order, fresh fruit, and many other breakfast items including sausage, potatoes, pancakes, etc. There is also a little outdoor cabana bar. They have live entertainment nightly. The pool and pool area are nice and clean. I would highly recommend this hotel! While we were there we visited a little lobster place on the main strip just down the street from the candy store. We had Lobster Thermador and Lobster grilled over wood in garlic butter sauce. With it you get a twice baked potatoe all for about $24 each. You have to go there! Also, four-wheeling is a must! At $20 per hour, you can't beat it! Oh and don't forget the visit the Old Port for some great entertainment and the shopping is to die for!!! Everyone treated us wonderfully! At just about a 7 hr drive from Las Cruces, we are looking forward to visiting again and again!

We have stayed at Playa Bonita every year from the year it opened; before that we have been camping on wild Mexican beaches since 1971. The close availability of the excellent beach and accommodations that were comfortable but not glitzy made Playa Bonita a welcome addition to the developing village. Rocky Point has changed over the decades, some to the better, some not. The non-Mexican investment that is putting up the monster highrise condos and hotels is destroying the specialness of Puerto Penasco. Let the previous reviewer stay in one of these pampering and mind numbing prisons.

Unfortunately, Playa Bonita is trying to compete with these monsters, and can't. New rules. Closing off some access steps to the beach makes it difficult for the handicapped. The ugly orange fence to keep the vendors away from the wall is a double mistake. Fortunately a high tide and high waves took out the fence while we were there. The vendors have always been polite and we could contibute to the economy of the real Mexico and not send our dollars into the pockets of the corporate CEOs.

Now we hear that the Playa Bonita RV park (where we sometimes stay) will soon be torn up and replaced by another highrise monster. If that happens I hope that Playa Bonita will become a haven for those who come for the beach and the Mexican culture and not the simulated excess from the highrise monsters.

Let's just say if someone from AZ says "OMG Rocky Point is Just like Cabo San Lucas" please ask them if they have ever been to Cabo San Lucas before you take their advice. Rocky point is disgusting and dirty. Definitely Tejuana with a beach!!! It does not come close to Cabo so these people don't know what they are talking about. I have been to Cabo about 4 times. The beach itself is ok. If you are going just to lay out at the beach and focus on the beach then ok. The hotel itself is OK, run down, and locals probably live there. If you are going there thinking you will be able to relax in the hot tub... think again because at all times there are about 15 kids in there and about 4 sets of parents. The food is good and inexpensive but there is nothing at Rocky point to do. We drove all over the damn place trying to look for this "OMG GREAT PLACE TO BE" and never found it. Maybe in 15 years it will be nice...but for now.....pick another destination if you know what is best for you!
No paved roads and if you are headed there after reading this review....MAKE SURE YOU GET MEXICAN INSURANCE or you will regret it!

Playa Bonita was expensive, dirty, and a waste of time. I guess my beef isn't entirely with the hotel itself. It was one of the better hotels in the stink hole of Rocky Point. We went in high season and paid $150 per night. They lost our reservation, so thank God we had the confirmation page becasue they were sold out and good luck trying to find something decent in Rocky Point!! Think of Rocky Point as Tijuana with a beach, not exactly paradise. We tried to make the most of the trip because accidents are bound to occur. We wanted to try the hot tub, but there were always at least 10 kids in the hot tub that was bubbling due to the urine overload. The food was okay but fairly cheap. The rooms were pretty worn out. The staff were polite though and helpful. There was decapitated baby seal on the beach too. I just think there are so many other beautiful places in Mexico to spend $150 per night. Don't waste your time and book another city. I don't get what all the hype is about?!
