I have stayed in Hermosillo before at the Hotel Fiesta Americana, which is a good hotel. This was my first time staying at the Holiday Inn and have to say, despite my initial worries, it was a pleasant experience.
Location was about what can be expected for Hermosillo. Holiday Inn is next door to just about all of the other hotels in town. The front desk staff was very pleasant and helpful. Parking was good...be aware that you will have your car washed several times during your stay by people in the parking lot...it is customary to tip them and a common occurrence in most of Hermosillo. The room we got on the first floor with 2 double beds was in need of updating. Other members of our party stayed in a room directly upstairs that had been remodeled. The remodeled rooms are modern and chic. I recommend requesting one.
All the rooms face a quart yard with a garden, small fountain and pool. It is very quaint and colonial. Come to find out the hotel was not originally a Holiday Inn but merely purchased by the chain. This explains some of the more authentic aspects about the hotel.
The best part is the breakfast...a huge buffet with traditional Mexican fare along with a nice selection of fruit, pastries and juices. Speaking of food, if you didn't already know, carne asada tacos are king in Hermosillo. Really, Sonoran beef is the best. Make sure to hit up a taco stand while you are there and, if you are adventurous, also try tacos de cabeza. They are a specialty in Hermosillo.
