“Perfect Evening”

When calling into the Tinners Arms after a coastal walk in November, we noted "music" advertised for Thursday evenings. We arrived on Thursday 29th December to celebrate New Year in St. Ives. Our party booked a table and despite poor Trip Advisor reviews we were not disappointed. We found the menu imaginative and reasonably priced. My coeliac husband was catered for and the service was friendly and good. We chose to eat in the cosy bar. We were offered seats in the dining room, but it appeared rather cold, sterile and empty. At 9.00 p.m some musicians arrived and gathered around the fire. By the end of the evening there were 11 accomplished performers, playing toe tapping chants. A fantastic memorable evening for everyone in our party.Well done "The Tinners Arms" we'd love to join you again.

“The best pub in the world - on a good day!”

We love the TInner's. I've been going there since 1978, and I'm happy to say the bar hasn't changed a bit. The setting on the West Penwith coast, with the windswept little church and wonderful coastal scenery, is just perfect, and the Tinner's bar a cosy place to shelter from the weather. We've had varying experiences in the past - on occasions the service is curt and offhand, and yes, it is really annoying when you arrive one minute past kitchen closing time and find the hot food has finished. If it was me, I'd carry on cooking for as long as people are prepared to pay , but clearly they are doing well enough not to bother.

On this occasion we had a drink in the bar and then returned later in the week for dinner, and weren't disappointed. We ate in the bar where the atmosphere is better and the open fire makes it very warm and welcoming. Our smoked haddock with an egg on mash was perfectly cooked, a decent sized portion and reasonably priced. A treacle tart and an apple and blackcurrant crumble were tasty and filling. Friendly service and a decent glass of New Zealand Sauvignon, as well as the Sharps bitter, completed a good dining experience. If you want extremely fancy food in delicate portions, go to the Gurnards Head down the road. If you want a good pub atmosphere and tasty food, the Tinners is worth a try, especially in autumn when it's a little quieter. There is also folk music on Thursday evenings.

“Tinners arms”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 November 2011

I love this villiage and this pub and all the people in it. I was married in the church opposite and i would love my wish to come true one day of being able to afford a holiday there soon. Petrol prices are so high now and would cost £100 each way from london. Zennor i dearly miss you. I could sit in theTinners all day just soaking up the atmosphere it is a charming soul soothing little place. Ps Hi Ann, and Sue from Treigerant house b+band all my friends there i miss you all terribly.from Jenny and Mike. I suggest anyone wanting to leave bad comments on here take your bad energy elsewhere as this little plae does not deserve it.

Has all the charm and atmosphere of a dentist's waiting room.We stopped in while walking the coastal path from St Ives to Zennor..first mistake..second mistake was having a teenager with us..instantly banished to the outer reaches of the pub even though we were the only people in there.Service was begrudging at best...never again not even for a glass of water.

“Don't bother - go to the Gurnards Head instead!”

We ate in the 'dining area' of this scruffy old pub. The fresh paint and new chairs are all it has to recommend it. If it's trying to be a gastro pub it has a long way to go. Cheap cutlery, paper table cloths, no heating and scruffy waiters are really not on at the prices they expect you to pay. I had mackerel and salad with chips for £10.50 - mackerel are 2 for £1.00. I was presented with one fish (no plate for bones) a couple of lettuce leaves, one (dried up) slice of cucumber and a quarter (also dried up) of a tomato. My partner had wild mushroom pasta - they were not wild mushrooms and came in a lot of very rich sauce. The 'waiters' were dressed like they had just finished a shift at the local garage and had finger nails to match. Pay the extra for an excellent meal at Gurnards Head.
