Great place to stay cheaply and do nothing
Very laid-back, a great place to relax and essentially do nothing. Felipe (owner) was gracious and helpful, and offered to get us 1/2 price bus tickets back to Guadalajara (unfortunately, we had already bought them). His wife Linda is a good cook, and we ate 4 breakfasts on site. We only ate one dinner there, and it was OK and extremely inexpensive (less than $5 US per person w/o drinks). "Happy hour" is from 1 to 5 PM with beer at $1 US. We had a 2nd floor room facing the ocean, and waves lulled us to sleep. Clientele seemed mainly retired Canadians and Europeans, who did not stay up to all hours (as mentioned in other reviews.) One night there were some in the bar below us, trying to remember 60's songs with a guitar, but they kept losing track after the first line or two. They had no staying power, and went to bed about 11. Rooms were reasonably clean, but maid service was spotty. Climate in early March was perfect, with breeze to keep the bugs away and low humidity and nice temps. I agree with the observation about the toucans - Felipe needs to scrub down the poop which is right at the entry. TV was not working - Felipe said something about the cable service being on the fritz. We did not care - brought books to read and did not need to keep up with the world. Most reviews on this site are old - our experience was generally much nicer than the reviews that are negative, and we are not youngsters who will put up with a lot of crap. Resaurants in the rest of Melaque are pretty basic, but the Maya had great Asian-fusion cooking and wonderful seafood. In short - stay at San felipe if you want quiet and a great view of the beach and waves to put you to sleep.
