When we first walked into our ocean view room on the second floor we thought it a bit drab, but then opened the drapes to a stunning view of the beach and ocean. The room was a nice size, and we did spend a lot of time on the balcony in the mornings and at the end of the day watching the amazing sunsets. In addition to the room being cleaned daily, the whole hotel was constantly being cleaned and swept. The housekeeping staff was extremely nice and accommodating. Our maid left four bottles of water for us each day. The pool was beautiful, and again, was attended to daily. The folks at reception were friendly when we initiated contact. Bananas Restaurant had great service and food and friendly staff. Location was great - away from the noise of the clubs and literally steps to the beach. The sound of the waves was loud, but nothing that a set of earplugs didn't fix. By the end of our stay we had grown used to the roar of the waves and it became quite soothing. A wonderful beach front place. A bit pricier than other hotels in Barra but definitely worth it for just the ocean view alone.
Right on the beach, nice mix of regulars, families, and couples. Large price differential for ocean view rooms, which are totally worth it. The rooms are clean, a little shabby, but you're on the beach all day. The restaurant, Bananas, is very popular for breakfast; I suggest combo #2. The pool itself is clean but the poolside area needed to be hosed down...gritty. Staff is very friendly and quickly recognized us and knew our names. Housekeeping makes up your room early and there were plenty of towels. This is not a shiny new place but it fits perfectly with what you want from Barra...if you want marble and glitz, go to Manzanillo or Nuevo Vallarta.
My husband and I stayed four nights here in early December 2008. We were very happy with the location and the room was roomy enough for just the two of us. We were in a room overlooking the beach and it was just beautiful. However, at night the waves do CRASH and it is a consideration if that bothers one. I was okay with it. However, the last night we stayed on a Saturday there was a wedding on the beach and the music was unbelievably loud and thumping til early in the morning. I had brought ear plugs and that settled that problem. The beds are very hard. We went checking out other places to stay in town and all the beds are the same. They don't use two mattresses. After the first night I got used enough to it that I could sleep. I really enjoyed the patio to sit on and read. Very relaxing.
The restaurant, Bananas, was excellent for breakfast. In fact we never went any place else for breakfast. We watched dolphins, hummingbirds and one morning were entertained by a man climbing the coconut trees and pruning them in front of us. They had the best pancakes and my husband enjoyed his regular egg breakfast.
It took a couple of weeks to get the reservation lined up via internet so I would recommend you allow plenty of time for that.
As I said the location was great as we could walk anywhere in town from the hotel. We definitely would stay there again.
I stayed at this hotel in February 2008. At check-in you were given a blue plastic bracelet that you were suppose to wear so you could get back in to the hotel and use the pool I didn't wear it and had no trouble coming or going without it. my room on the second floor was average , clean and sparsely furnished. The bed was one of best I've slept in in Mexico, but the surf noise is not for a light sleeper.
