“Not what you expect”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 November 2011

We came to Puebla to a wedding so we booked the room with months to spare. We thought it was strange they had not asked for a deposit, or advanced payment for the room, so one week before our arrival time I sent an email trying to confirm the reservation. Never got an answer. The day before the reservation I called twice (no response) and emailed them again. Nothing. Still, we drove to Puebla with high hopes of staying in a nice boutique hotel... With a SPA... A place worth what we were paying (it's not a cheap hotel) We finally arrived to the hotel, thinking our room would look like the pictures on the web... Instead we were taken to a room that resembled a hostel. The room was dark, and looked dirty. The couch had no pillows to sit on.
We did not stay. But, at least we were not charged a cancellation fee. And we found a nicer, cleaner place for half the price.

“Odd little hotel”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 September 2011

I stayed at this hotel for two nights and found the hotel to be a little tacky. The hotel itself is very nice and the staff is very friendly. What I found odd was the 80's american music they were playing during breakfast. The breakfast itself is Mexican, sort of, and they service white baguette bread instead of the typical Mexican soft shell wraps. One morning they served me coffee with coffee whitener and substitute sugar and told me they had no real milk.

I also found the hotel fairly expensive considering the wifi they offer is from the Infinitum wireless carrier and they use Oxxo shopping bags for the garbage bags.

“Super nice staff!”

I completely agree with the previous review. This is a nice hotel if offered for about 30 dollars cheaper than the competitors on the same street. Definitely book a room upstairs as the downstairs' open courtyard is now a restaurant patio and can be loud and not very private (an absolutely delicious restaurant by the way, La Fonda Mexicana). We ended up at the Sebastian because Sacristia de Capuchinas messed up our reservation and somehow didn't have a room for us. But we liked it, more relaxed less stuffy than the Capuchinas and cheaper. The staff is super nice and Steven was so helpful and speaks perfect English. Just don't get your laundry done there, it ended up costing about 4 times as much as it would have cost to take it to a local laundrymat to have done.

  • Liked — Staff and huge room

“good budget option if seeking small, historic hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 March 2006

Just returned from a 3 day trip in Puebla. It's a fanstastic destination for anyone who appreciates authentic Mexican food (this is where mole, among other things, was invented), Mexican ceramics, and other indigenous arts and crafts. I'd recommend staying in the historic center. We stayed at the San Sebastian, a 16th c. home built with a courtyard and now a small hotel. Situated on the same block as El Sueno Hotel and Spa as well as Meson Sacristia de Capuchinas, it follows them with the same idea of juxtaposing the very new with the very old. I'd say that San Sebastian isn't quite as consistently successful as either of the other two in terms of its aesthetics, and the rooms on the first floor are very dark (there are no windows except the glass doors that open onto the now enclosed courtyard). But the hotel is quieter because the courtyard does not do double-duty as a restaurant and the room rates seem lower and more flexible. The bedding is dingy and the brick floors always seemed dusty, but the exposed brick walls, 20 foot high beamed ceilings and other lovely details provide a lot of historical style. The service professionals were friendly and accommodating (my sense is that they know little English). The lighting in the room is very poor--it's impossible to read. But each room has cable TV and a lovely antique wardrobe. Most of the rooms are outrageously large. My recommendation would be to stay here if they offer you a rate at least $30-$40 U.S. dollars less than their two competitors (Sueno and Sacristia de Capuchinas) down the street. But also note that breakfast is often included in the rates of the latter and it is not offered at San Sabastian. I'd strongly recommend the cafeteria in the art museum on the corner for breakfast. It looks like a very stark cafeteria, but the food is excellent (the usual Mexican breakfast options well done) and it's very inexpensive. We also ate breakfast one morning in the ultra modern breakfast room and bar at El Sueno; it was a more pleasant room but the food didn't compare to the museum. Ask for an upstairs room if you stay here.
