“Decline and Fall”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 February 2010

There is no restaurant, no bar, no breakfast (in bed or anywhere), no concierge.
This hotel is no longer affiliated with Meson de la Compania - where I stayed last time and still misleadingly shares a website. I thought I would receive similar service: a mistake.
The wilting flowers typify the place.
A dinosaur TV (and lousy reception).
All that said: the location is great, my room itself (#2) was removed from the very busy street (though not from neighborhood dogs) and was vast and very comfortable (#8 is even nicer). The maid service was exemplary. And since I was the only guest for four days, t was a peaceful stay - and I am sure you too can get a half-price deal (though other so-called boutique hotels are also hurting, so deals abound).

“Lovely Rooms.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 March 2009

We enjoyed our stay at Capuchinas, though it was not perfect. We had a large room in front of the building (number 5). The rooms are lovely, but there was a persistant smell of sewage. We asked the front desk clerk about moving, but she said they all have the odor because the building is so old. We got somewhat accustomed to it, but it did detract from the stay.

The large shutters in the windows blocked most of the noise, but a barking dog kept us up most of one night. What can you say - Mexico is noisy and this was not unusual. We loved the location close to the zocolo and to the wonderful Ampara museum (though we did get "slimed" on the next block - another story. )

Breakfast was good - but other meals just adequate. When we asked for wine, the waiter seemed surprised and finally came up with one bottle (previously opened) of chilean red. He poured tiny glasses and charged too much for them. I should mention that we got a fairly good deal through Luxury Link for this hotel - just $ 337 for 3 nights inlcuding breakfast, taxes and one dinner. We loved Puebla and would go back, but possibly to another place next time.

“Wonderful inn!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 January 2009

We stayed here for one night and really liked the place. It's beautifully decorated and the service is excellent. Our room, #4, was lovely, comfortable and clean and the location of the hotel couldn't be better -- it's just off the main square so you are in close proximately without the noise.

One warning though -- I noticed that at least one of the rooms didn't have a window (I think it was room #6), so that's something to inquire about when booking if natural light makes a difference to you.

Also I'd skip the restaurant. It's not bad, but there are better places to eat in Puebla.

“Great location and service”

We had a wonderful time at Meson de Capuchinas. Five friends traveling together, we had three rooms. The location is excellent. Everything was very smooth, the rooms lovely, service was attentive, the food excellent, breakfasts great and the employees very honest (money was left in my car and returned to me). We hope to be back soon!

“Sweet spot”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 December 2008

While staying at the hotel construction work began on the street, creating a lot of dust and mess, and making it difficult to access by car. Two of the nights we stayed there was a barking dog through the night which made sleeping a challenge. Turns out people who live next door chain their pooch up on the roof at night and are somehow impervious to the noise. That being said, Puebla was a great destination, and Meson de Capuchinas was an absolute gem. The room was reasonably comfortable and in the best part of town, just off the main square. The food at the hotel was fantastic. As foodies, and especially lovers of (real) Mexican cuisine, my fiancee and I found ourselves coming back to the hotel far more than we ever would have predicted for meals. But the real treasure at Meson de Capuchinas was the staff. Having traveled extensively through Europe, Asia, North and South America, I think I can say that no hotel staff has ever been so engaging, so helpful, so friendly, so truly happy to accommodate our needs and wants as that of Meson de Cap. We became friends with our tour guide, the front desk clerk, the chef, the waiter, and the bartender/porter, each of whom added some special and personal touch to our visit. We will likely return to Puebla, as much for the Hotel as for the slow, intoxicating rhythm of the oldest Spanish Colonial city in North America.
