“Beautiful building, staff need training in hospitality”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 October 2011

I booked this hotel based on it's website - it had beautiful photos and seemed to be a lovely hotel. This actually turned out to be the worst place we stayed in a month-long trip throughout Mexico. I don't like writing lots of negative things, but I have to be honest about my experience at San Leonardo.

The building itself is lovely, particularly the lobby, as it is apparently a historical mansion that has been converted into a hotel. It is kept very clean, and in excellent condition. But we were appalled by the attitude of the staff working there. With one exception, the reception staff and the restaurant staff were unhelpful and unfriendly, bordering on disdainful towards us. We thought that this may have been because we were a little travel worn and dusty when we first arrived, (all the other travellers there were particularly well heeled) but this did not improve at all over the 2 nights we stayed there. Even though our spanish was not fantastic, we still attempted to speak it, and could not understand why we were being treated so poorly. We had just come from the Hilton, where we were not treated any differently for being dressed down, so this came as quite a surprise.

If we asked for directions to anything in particular, the female reception staff seemed to smirk at each other, give each other 'looks' and give incredibly vague directions. They behaved more like high school girls with an attitude problem than professional hospitality personnel.

They made us wait for an hour after check in time before our room was ready, and would probably have let us sit in the lobby all evening, had not this one particular staff member seen us waiting and pushed for us to get access to our room.

The room itself was very characterless and bland, with cream coloured, plain furniture and nothing on the walls. The acoustics are particularly bad, so the noise travels to the rooms at all hours.

The room service food was the worst I have ever experienced anywhere, seemed like recycled old food they microwaved and put on a plate. My partner ordered a burger and the meat inside was completely raw.

This hotel was a terrible disappointment, and I would strongly suggest to other travellers to select another of the many hotels in the area (and even on the same street) before choosing this one.

The hotel is in the historical center, 2 minutes walk from the Zocalo so the location is excellent. There are restaurants and other shops around which is great. The service was good. The room was really small but clean and had everything you need. It was really quiet, we sleep well so I do recommend this hotel if you don't plan to spend a lot of time in your room, but want to enjoy the historical center.

“Excellent location, really nice hotel, reasonably priced”

My husband and I spent the weekend in Puebla at the Hotel San Leonardo after a week working in Mexico City. As with all the hotels I've picked using Trip Advisor, it was superb.

The staff was friendly and able to help us with all our needs (we are pretty self contained) and not intrusive. We have limited Spanish skills and were easily able to communicate.

The hotel itself is beautiful with a traditional and historical air about it without seeming overly formal. Although we didn't eat in the restaurant, the menu looked excellent, with reasonable prices and was open from 7 AM to 11 PM. There were many restaurants very close by, at various price points.

Our room was on 5th floor at the back of the hotel, with a tiny balcony where we had a fantastic view of jillions of church domes including the Zocalo AND the volcano! Wow! That was the best part. Awesome! We thought the front of the hotel facing the street would have been more noisy (although it wasn't a "noisy" street, it was narrow with solid 2-8 story buildings and there was quite a bit of traffic), and we would have missed the volcano! It was very conveniently located, just a couple of blocks from the Zocalo--easy to find, easy to walk to and from all the activity of the town square. The church bells were a nice touch.

Our room was very clean with 2 quite firm double beds. The beds seemed smaller than regular double but since there were 2 of them we could spread out comfortably. We had an air conditioner that we could control ourselves so were able to maintain a temp that was comfortable to us. We missed not having a refrigerator to chill our beverages, and a setup to make coffee but would not have traded anything for those conveniences, which were readily available nearby.

I would highly recommend Hotel San Leonardo. We will stay there next time we go to Puebla.

“Great Location & Great Staff.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 October 2009

The best about this hotel is location! only one block from the Zocalo, two blocks from the Parian market. The rooms are clean and comfortable with lovely view. The hotel is a beautiful colonial house attached to a modern small building. Staff was friendly and helpful at all times. The only thing that I did not like is that my mother saw a cockroach near the hotel restaurant and obviously we didn't eat there but there is a "Vip's" restaurant right on the corner and is an excellent option for tasty breakfast. For fearless chilli lovers, go to the "Puerto de Veracruz" restaurant at the downtown and try the "chiltepin fish"... the hottest dish on earth!!
