“Beautiful historic building, good value”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 January 2012

Stayed here for 1 night, passing through Puebla, based on others good reviews. The only room they had available was 795 pesos, for 2 twin beds, however they could be moved together quite easily.

The building dates back to the 1600s, and has an amazing, old style elevator with an attendant. However, there are occasional times when an attendant does not answer the buzzer and you have to walk. These old stairs are not fun with suitcases. That only happened to us once though.

Beautiful rooftop terrace with a nice view. Quiet side street, about 2 blocks from the zocalo. Safe area, pleasant walk at night.

Rooms are budget, although clean. Hair dryer and basic toiletries. Very, very thin walls. Could actually here the conversation of people next door to us. Not just the mumbling, but words! Nice sitting areas all around on each floor.

Good value for the location. On our way back through, we stayed at the Santiago on the other side of the zocalo, which was only slightly less nice, but at 450 pesos, a much better value.

“Charming hotel, excellent location”

Charming hotel, excellent location (2 minutes away from the city main square / cathedral /shopping streets / restaurants), quite large rooms, clean, nice restaurant, safe in the room, good value for money. The balcony door leaves a small gap, therefore it can be a little noisy during the day. No heating – in December it was a little cold outside during the night (however the temperature inside the hotel was acceptable). No buffet breakfast, but you can get juice, omelettes / fried eggs, pancakes, coffee, tea. Beautiful view of the surroundings (including the volcano) from the hotel roof.

“Wonderful service in an historic setting”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 January 2012

I've stayed in many hotels in Mexico, colonial and modern. I was surprised by the spaciousness of the rooms. My room was a double--two double beds, but each with its own bench, a large dresser. I was with a group of 11 total. One of the rooms was a triple: two doubles and then a balcony room for the third double bed. But rooms are generally doubles. The staff at reception had everything ready for our arrival, including key cards and trilingual brochures about the hotel with a map of the historic center. Location is one block from the zócalo, or main square, which has many cafes and restaurants and ATMs available.

Breakfast options vary and are reasonable, with the best deal being the all-inclusive breakfast.

The staff speaks enough of several languages to assist travelers. I heard them use English, French, and German.

The only potential downside is that they do receive larger groups. Twice on our last weekend stay a group of 24 came, arriving to margaritas and peanuts. They leave the next morning, but the dinner period was a bit noisy.

“It's not old... it's living history!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 January 2012

Some could look at a bit of peeling paint on the ceiling and call it old. I looked at it and wondered which century the original paint was applied!

If yours' is a visit to see historic Puebla, the Hotel Colonial will certainly be part of every story you tell. The rooms are adequate, clean, and well appointed considering the price range, and need to stay with the historic feel. Every hallway is filled with something interesting to check out... if you don't use this as a learning experience for younger travelers, you are missing a bet.

The location is exceptional... you can walk to many of Puebla's best historic attractions. On weekends there are nearby artisan markets. It is right admidst several universities, so the mix of students provide interesting cafes, and the Zocalo always has something to partake.

Puebla locals were very evident in the dining room for the afternoon 'comida del dia' which was always some special not-on-the-menu dining experience and a value-priced meal. Don't miss it, even if you dine elsewhere for other meals.

Explore the entire hotel, including the roof-top, where you can get some great sunrise photos (as well as do your laundry!) Check out the plaques outside and in the square... this hotel and plaza has been the location of many historic events.

I agree with other comments... service was good and helpful. The Cholula tour... only a 'C' grade, but the price was very low, so it was worth it.

I handled all my reservations over email without a hitch... the owner generally answered the email and questions... and that's always a good sign. Wireless internet available throughout the hotel.

I will be back!

Room Tip: You may not notice... but there are heavy wooden shutter doors you can pull out to avoid the noise...

“Great place in a great location”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 December 2011

I stayed for 2 nights in this hotel for a Puebla sightseeing trip. The hotel is very conveniently located (1 block from the main square/Zocalo) and the rooms are really pretty. It’s a converted nunnery and they did a great job in conserving the old atmosphere while at the same time creating very comfortable and airy rooms.

I went in December and it was a bit chilly, during that time I would recommend taking a thick sweater or hot water bottle to be cozy at night (that’s a general rule for Mexican buildings during that time, though).

The food in the restaurant was ok but not very special; there are better options as soon as you walk out the door.

All in all, I can really recommend this hotel; the price was really good for the comfort received. Puebla is definitely worth a visit if you like cute little streets with markets and colorful buildings. The historic center is just charming. And this hotel has the perfect location to go and explore it.
