“1980's Decor with 2010 Service”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 November 2010

I stayed at this hotel for the first time. Been to Puebla many times but never stayed in this part of town. The hotel is one block from Juarez Avenue which has dozens of great restaurants. Since I had decided not to rent a car this trip, I wanted to be able to walk to everything. It was a good choice from that point of view. Great location.

The decor? Well, the 1980's are alive and well in this hotel. The place is spotless. Just dated. Everything. I kept thinking how stunning the place would look with a coat of white paint and a splash of color here and there. A 32" LCD TV. Brown woods. Beige walls. 21" CRT TV. A functional but cramped bathroom.

Those negatives aside, this hotel is reasonably priced. The staff couldn't be friendlier or more helpful. There was always a taxi when I needed it too.

The hotel seems to be popular with Mexican travelers, both families and business people. The area is safe and the many restaurants are some of the best I have been to in Puebla.

“You've been warned!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 February 2010

I was in Puebla with friends and needed rooms for a couple of nights. Our friend who lives there recommended Best Western because he assumed that since it's an American brand, it would be decent. Boy was he wrong. Our rooms felt so old, unclean, and dated. Wish I'd taken a picture of the room and bathroom so you can see my disappointment. My bathroom didn't have towels and the room was blasting air conditioning with no room control. The carpet and walls had unsightly stains and the shower was moldy smelling. I understand that some hotels are just old and can't afford to renovate, but if you're going to rent out rooms at least have the rooms clean and ready. Checked out the next day and paid more to stay at El Sueno in downtown Puebla, pricier but exponentially better.

“Absolutely terrible”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 December 2009

I stayed in Puebla to attend an academic event. I arrived with a group of friends who were attending the same event and we all stayed in the "Best Western Real de Puebla". As son as I arrived in the hotel I noticed a big stain in the floor. Later on, I noticed that the bed cover had a huge blood stain. When I opened the bed, the sheets were full of other people's hairs and had several stains of unidentified substances (maybe saliva, sweat or other things). Clearly the sheets had not been changed since the last guest had left.

The windows ere broken, there were no toiletries or clean towels, the building was old and run down and the food terrible and expensive.

All the friends who were with me had a similar experience with their rooms. They all ask for a change of room, sometimes to find that in the new room the light was broken or that the sheets had more hairs than in the previos room.

We could not move hotels because there were no vacancies in other hotels, and we had paid in advance. My boss arrived one day after the rest of the group. We told the people in the front desk that it was VERY important that they gave this person a clean room. When he arrived he found a clean room, that was located just on top of a very noisy bar. He could not sleep at all...

A terrible experience in the "SCI hotel" as we called it since probably there were all kinds of DNA traces in every inch of the rooms

“Disappointing but not terrible”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 January 2009

We were a bit disappointed by this hotel but some of the other reviews seem to be harsh.
One disappointment was the location. The hotel website indicates that "The Best Western Real de Puebla is located in town just 1 block from the financial and tourist district" but there is not much for a tourist to see within a mile of the hotel. The town centre can be reached by a short taxi drive or by bus.
The room was large enough and had all the things you would expect to find, including free wireless internet (although it did not work at first). It did look a bit dated and some of the decorations were damaged. Everything seemed to be functional.
There is no hotel car park but the hotel offers valet parking (not included in our rate).
The hotel has a swimming pool (not accessible at the time that we went there but it was the cold season) and a what seemed to be a decent gym.
We had to wait for half an hour for our room to be ready but, to be fair, we did arrive in the morning.
If we were to go back to Puebla, next time we would probably try another hotel.

“Go Elsewhere!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 August 2008

This hotel is the biggest dump we have encountered anywhere in Mexico. Best Western should be ashamed to allow this property to remain a part of their brand/chain. We have never encountered carpeting as filthy as that which covered the public hallway & room. And the bathroom was disgusting. We took one look & left. No way would we actually spend the night in this place, or chance getting into the beds. Shame on Best Western!!
