This was a return visit to a very nice establishment. Situated in a quiet country lane well off the beaten track, the Barton Cross Hotel is a great place for a good meal.
On arrival, you enter a very quiet, but inviting lounge, boasting a roaring log fire, we sat alone for about 10 minutes before anyone came to see us. Not really a problem to us, but some may find it off putting. Our drinks order was taken, and we were given the menu, we were informed of the specials and the soup of the day. A waitress brought our drinks and a plate of canapes! All very civilised! After a wait of about 10 minutes we were invited through to our table, the restaurant was very quiet for a Saturday evening, in fact during the entire evening only 9 people were were dining.
Our starters arrived! But oddly! One at a time, and over a period of about 4 minutes? Waiting until all the party (3) had thier starter caused the first to get a little cold. The quality of all the starters was excellent! Our plates were cleaned away very slowly, and we had a long wait for our next course! Soup, again it was good, but a little salty for out taste.
We then had a very long wait for our main meal! 20 minutes? The steaks (fillet) were cooked perfect, and the presentation was very nice, the vegetables were OK, and very hot! The only complaint I had was that apart from a very small amount of sauce around my steak, there was no additional sauce or gravey to put on the vegetables? Another long waited before we had our plates cleared away and desert menus offered! Deserts were outstanding.
At the end of our meal we moved back into the lounge to have after meal coffee.
All in all it was a very good evening, food was very good, service was very good (but very slow) and the bill was ? Well for that you will have to visit yourself!
A relaxed evening meal, in good company, in a good establishment, was it worth it? YES
