“Lovely thatched hotel”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 December 2011

We were given a very warm welcome at this small 3* AA hotel after a very long journey. We had asked for a ground floor room. It was clean and spacious . There was a fridge, a desk with free WIFI, two easy chairs, a table and a flat screen TV with french doors leading to a small balcony which would be nice in summer! The bed was a queen size, very clean white sheets and quite firm. The bathroom was a good size and had lots of fluffy towels and the usual shower gel, etc. The heating was very efficient and adjustable. The owner is extremely pleasant and helpful. We were brought fresh milk for our tea and coffee to make in the room. In the evening there was a roaring log fire in the lounge. The food here is excellent. You would need a car to get here as it is off the beaten track and very quiet.

“Beautiful food in a relaxing atmosphere...”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 December 2011

We've been coming here for 15 years. We had our wedding meal here which was amazing, and we come back every year for our anniversary meal.

The Barton Cross is a beautiful thatched hotel/restaurant set in a lovely area.
You enter a cosy 'olde worlde' lounge to a roaring fire in the winter months. The chef is amazing and the quality of food wonderful. You always get a little plate of canapes to nibble on whilst choosing your food. There are always good meat, seafood & vegetarian options available.
In response to the previous comment about service being slow - maybe we've all got too used to rushing a meal and everything having to be fast and 'now'? We've always found the time in between each course fine as it allows your food to go down.

Regarding the price of the meal, we would say the value is excellent! We have visited many restaurants in and around Exeter and feel The Barton Cross is extremely competitive & excellent value for the quality you receive.

We always feel very relaxed when we visit.

“Would have been excellent! Except for slow service”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 November 2011

This was a return visit to a very nice establishment. Situated in a quiet country lane well off the beaten track, the Barton Cross Hotel is a great place for a good meal.
On arrival, you enter a very quiet, but inviting lounge, boasting a roaring log fire, we sat alone for about 10 minutes before anyone came to see us. Not really a problem to us, but some may find it off putting. Our drinks order was taken, and we were given the menu, we were informed of the specials and the soup of the day. A waitress brought our drinks and a plate of canapes! All very civilised! After a wait of about 10 minutes we were invited through to our table, the restaurant was very quiet for a Saturday evening, in fact during the entire evening only 9 people were were dining.
Our starters arrived! But oddly! One at a time, and over a period of about 4 minutes? Waiting until all the party (3) had thier starter caused the first to get a little cold. The quality of all the starters was excellent! Our plates were cleaned away very slowly, and we had a long wait for our next course! Soup, again it was good, but a little salty for out taste.
We then had a very long wait for our main meal! 20 minutes? The steaks (fillet) were cooked perfect, and the presentation was very nice, the vegetables were OK, and very hot! The only complaint I had was that apart from a very small amount of sauce around my steak, there was no additional sauce or gravey to put on the vegetables? Another long waited before we had our plates cleared away and desert menus offered! Deserts were outstanding.
At the end of our meal we moved back into the lounge to have after meal coffee.
All in all it was a very good evening, food was very good, service was very good (but very slow) and the bill was ? Well for that you will have to visit yourself!
A relaxed evening meal, in good company, in a good establishment, was it worth it? YES

“love it!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 October 2011

I've been to Barton Cross several times and it's always a treat. Lovely big bedrooms and bathrooms - all very well equipped and comfortable. Fantastic food, friendly staff, lovely location and somewhere you can really relax. I suppose I'm a bit biased - I was brought up in this bit of Devon and my granny lived in nearby Stoke Canon. I think my great granny was married in Huxham Church - so it's sort of like coming home!

“Little gem of a hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 September 2011

We stayed for one night in this hotel and received a warm welcome. The rooms were spacious and luxurious and the hotel was very cosy. It's just outside of Exeter, hidden away in the countryside but still only a 10 minute drive to Exeter.
Our breakfast was fantastic and I wish we'd had time to stay for dinner too. Hope to return!
