“Would have been excellent! Except for slow service”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 November 2011

This was a return visit to a very nice establishment. Situated in a quiet country lane well off the beaten track, the Barton Cross Hotel is a great place for a good meal.
On arrival, you enter a very quiet, but inviting lounge, boasting a roaring log fire, we sat alone for about 10 minutes before anyone came to see us. Not really a problem to us, but some may find it off putting. Our drinks order was taken, and we were given the menu, we were informed of the specials and the soup of the day. A waitress brought our drinks and a plate of canapes! All very civilised! After a wait of about 10 minutes we were invited through to our table, the restaurant was very quiet for a Saturday evening, in fact during the entire evening only 9 people were were dining.
Our starters arrived! But oddly! One at a time, and over a period of about 4 minutes? Waiting until all the party (3) had thier starter caused the first to get a little cold. The quality of all the starters was excellent! Our plates were cleaned away very slowly, and we had a long wait for our next course! Soup, again it was good, but a little salty for out taste.
We then had a very long wait for our main meal! 20 minutes? The steaks (fillet) were cooked perfect, and the presentation was very nice, the vegetables were OK, and very hot! The only complaint I had was that apart from a very small amount of sauce around my steak, there was no additional sauce or gravey to put on the vegetables? Another long waited before we had our plates cleared away and desert menus offered! Deserts were outstanding.
At the end of our meal we moved back into the lounge to have after meal coffee.
All in all it was a very good evening, food was very good, service was very good (but very slow) and the bill was ? Well for that you will have to visit yourself!
A relaxed evening meal, in good company, in a good establishment, was it worth it? YES

“love it!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 October 2011

I've been to Barton Cross several times and it's always a treat. Lovely big bedrooms and bathrooms - all very well equipped and comfortable. Fantastic food, friendly staff, lovely location and somewhere you can really relax. I suppose I'm a bit biased - I was brought up in this bit of Devon and my granny lived in nearby Stoke Canon. I think my great granny was married in Huxham Church - so it's sort of like coming home!

“Little gem of a hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 September 2011

We stayed for one night in this hotel and received a warm welcome. The rooms were spacious and luxurious and the hotel was very cosy. It's just outside of Exeter, hidden away in the countryside but still only a 10 minute drive to Exeter.
Our breakfast was fantastic and I wish we'd had time to stay for dinner too. Hope to return!

“Quaint Hotel with all the ammenities”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 September 2011

We found that Barton Cross Hotel was a bit outside of Exeter and required either a bus or taxi to get to the hotel and back. However, Brian, the host, was very accommodating and drove us into Exeter each morning. Since we had planned visits to the south coast, we were away much of the day and did not find the trip back problematic. The bus offerred a one-day pass which was quite reasonable and convenient. Most of the time we ate away from the hotel (with the exception of breakfast). However, we had one dinner at the hotel and it was absolutely fabulous. So, if you'd like and have the time for a gourmet meal then I'd suggest at least one dinner there.

Room Tip: Be aware that transportation would need to be arranged, especially if travelling around Devon.

“A charming hotel with a very good restaurant”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 July 2011

Although we only stayed for one night we found the hotel to be very good overall. Fortunately I had read the reviews on Trip Advisor and knew that the hotel was not located where the map on one website said it was, but was actually at Huxham, a crossroads in the countryside with nothing much else near it apart from a lovely old church and a large farmhouse. It is an historic building that has been renovated extensively to create the hotel it is today while still preserving the period features that give it its unique character. As such, our room was comfortable and had room enough for us but was not what we'd call spacious but that's to be expected in a hotel of this type. The best thing about the hotel though was the quality of the menu in the restaurant. They certainly have a very good chef and the owner takes great pride in maintaining a very good wine cellar to compliment the quality of the food. Prices were reasonable too which was just as well as we were a few miles out of Exeter in the countryside and the nearest alternative restaurant would have been too far for us after a long day's drive from Portsmouth. The peace and quiet of the countryside and a comfortable bed made for a refreshing night's sleep (even with the window open for the lovely country air) and, after a lovely breakfast we journeyed on to London.
We would certainly stay there again and would recommend this hotel to others.

Room Tip: If you have heavy cases like us, ask for a ground floor room as there's no elevator.
