“Wonderful Hotel and Staff”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 February 2012

Just had a Saturday night at the Cottage Hotel for a family get together. The hotel is easy to find and has stunning views over Hope Cove and Bigbury, Burgh Island etc. Whilst the hotel itself has an Olde Worlde feel about it, this is a compliment not a criticism, considering the overall atmosphere.
I had a double 'superior' room with sea view, and there is no point NOT having a sea view here. The room was a good size, impecibly clean, warm and with all amenities (tea, coffee etc), and recently decorated I think.
The most impresssive featire of the hotel undoubtedly is the STAFF. They were simply wonderful! Very polite and courteous, couldn't do enough for you, made any requests seem a pleasure to sort out.
Dinner was a 5 course affair, somewhat limited choice but I paid ~£70 for dinner, bed and breakfast, so no complaints there (out of season). Waiting staff were great, polite, attentive and efficient. Food was good, and breakfast probably tthe best buffet breakfast I have ever had, The food was hot, well cooked and delicious. Nothing too much trouble for the staff, and the food was brought out in small quantities to ensure it didn't turn into the soggy mess somechain hotels laughingly call food!
Hope Cove is lovely, but I have to admit to some bias as I having been coming to Salcombe (5 miles away) and this area all my life. Highly recommended!

Room Tip: Sea view a must . I did notice a non sea view single room as I left and it was incredibly small. But...

“The finest fine dining experience!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 February 2012

We decided, whilst in Hope Cove, to book a table for two for dinner.

On arrival to the restaurant, we were shown to our table by a maitre'd, who was very smartly dressed in a tuxedo, and was very attentive & professional.

We opted for the five course meal, which represented incredible value for money. Each course was an culinary triumph! Courses included scallops, ham terrine, cherry sorbet, and sea bass.

The meal was finished off beautifully with an amazing selection of desserts, followed by an impressive cheese board.

Each course was brought to us by the professional, friendly and courteous staff, who were attentive, skilled and appeared to show pride in their roles, which was impressive, and refreshing.

The meal was nicely finished off with coffees in the lounge area.

All in all, the hotel offered a unique, first class, unforgettable dining experience...bravo!!

“A traditional family run hotel with amazing views of the cove”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 January 2012

I have to admit I have been here several times but never got round to writing a review. This hotel is a traditional hotel and well run by the staff. Some of the staff are quite young but they are well trained.

The hotel is perched on the top of the cove so if you stay here you *must* get a room with a view as the view is gorgeous. We stayed in one of the rooms with a balcony and a sea view.

The car park is pretty tight as you would expect due to the hotels position but you can reserve a space if you need to you can just ask. There is also an overspill car park higher up.

Check in was efficient and friendly and we were offered help with our case. The room was spotlessly clean, although there was some wear and tear starting to show with the decoration. The decoration is traditional rather than modern with a king size bed, big wardrobe, flat screen TV, small table and chairs.

The food we had for dinner was nice and the dessert trolley is great! For breakfast its a hot and cold buffet style but you can order eggs for fresh and a few other bits and pieces that they cook to order.

As well as strolling on the beach you and get along the coast paths quite easily. You must then reward your self with a cream tea on your return!

Room Tip: Treat yourself to a balcony room with a sea view

“Brilliant!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 January 2012

We have just spent 4 days at The Cottage, which included New Year's Eve. The whole experience was fantastic and the staff all worked incredibly hard to make it so.The food was superb, especially the dinner on New Year's Eve which was six courses. There were party favours on every table and the atmosphere was brilliant. The next day there was a Brunch which must have offered just about everything that anyone could want: 4 types of fish (haddock, kippers, scampi and smoked salmon with scrambled eggs), cereals, fruits, yoghurts, eggs cooked any way one desired, toast, croissant, juices and the usual ingredients of a full English breakfast. Most importantly there was a constant flow of Bucks Fizz, with staff coming round offering top ups. There was also cream tea layed on on New Year's Day which consisted of the usual scrummy scones, clotted cream and jam, but also Christmas cake, and date and walnut cake. Nobody could say they didn't get enough to eat or that it wasn't good value. The rooms was warm, clean, offered a lovely view and was quiet, even though there was a dog next door we never heard it.
Although we have stayed at The Cottage several times so obviously love it, I do not understand how anyone can be as critical as some reviews on here. Admittedly the average age is probably 55 but I can't see why this should be a problem. If you want young people around go to a more lively resort. If you want a modern hotel go to a Hilton or Holiday Inn. The Cottage is unique, and this along with the friendliness of the staff, the location and the value for money is why we love it and return as often as we can.
The Ireland family have a winning formula and the hotel is nearly always full which says a lot in my opinion. Who cares what the average age is?
Thank you to everyone at The Cottage who gave us such a wonderful holiday.
