My wife and I had been looking for a place away from the ordinary hotel atmosphere - and found our perfect hideout. A great set-up: Spacious room (we had the one with the shower),real good food in the restaurant / bar, made by the local Mexican cooks. Just sitting there with the waves in the background - we fell in love with this place.With a rented car we drove 5 times to Cabo San Lucas - a fun ride - even the potholes in the road were a nice challenge.We just loved to sit at the beach while the sun was setting to absorb the atmosphere.Just a hint: We had booked a trip to "Mag"-Bay for whalewatching with THE GRAY LINE. They did not show up in the morning - because "Fonda Del Mar" is only known as "Buzzards".
Many US-citizens come here to meet old friends - we joined a party with live music - what else can you expect? As we came from Germany we very really pleased by the warm welcome of Judie and Denny. Anyone who loves to be away from mass tourism - here is your place. We definitely will come back!

Pro: Buzzards (aka La Fonda del Mar) is far away from the chaos of the two Cabos
Con: You'll want to rent a car so that you don't feel stranded

Pro: Buzzards is solar powered--good for the environment
Con: There are rules about when you can and cannot flush the toilet

Pro: Rustic and down-to-earth
Con: The fan over the bed (essential to keeping the room cool), sounds like a 747 taking flight.

Pro: The restaurant/bar serves delicious food at good prices
Con: The accomodations are right next to the bar

Pro: Many, many lovely exotic birds in cages that line the building
Con: Waking up very early to the call of these many, many birds

We started our ten day stay in the Cabo area at LaFonda and I have to admit I was a bit hesitant when my husband pulled out a business card that he picked up somewhere in his travels and insisted on staying here.
But the rooms were very clean and well decorated. Truely a bargain when compared to room rates else where. The solar power was no problem had nice hot showers, the fans in the room made them very cool.
I liked the main palapa (Buzzards) always interesting people from the area as well as other travelers and often the friendly hosts Denny and Judy.
We had one of our best dinners on the trip here (not to mention reasonable) it was fresh caught Dorado cooked in tequila with fresh cilantro.
Breakfast came with the rooms. Traditional mexican food or typical american breakfast choices.

To do something a bit different during our stay in Baja Sur and Cabo, we decided to spend one night at the Fonda Del Mar B&B. Run by a couple of environmentally conscious expats, this should have been a great stop, and would have been except for the down right rude treatment by the owners. The room we had was nicely decorated and clean, although it had a shared shower. Lot's of warnings that the place runs on solar energy and batteries that could run out at night, but we had no problem. All-in-all a comfortable stay- except for the treament by the owners Denny and Judy.
They never made any attempt at greeting you when we arrived or during meals. One thing you expect at any B&B is a little bit of hospitality and polite conversation, but despite our best attempts at it, they didn't reciprocate. We sat down for breakfast with one of the owners and it was like pulling teeth to get a conversation going. When some of her buddies showed up after a round of golf, we were almost relieve when she again gave us the cold shoulder. At night and again in the morning, there were plenty of local expats hanging around in the bar/restaurant getting tanked, and the owners hung out with them while ignoring their few guests. It was very strange and made us glad to leave.
From reading other review, it appears that not everyone has a similar experience. Maybe we just caught them at a bad time, but based on our experience, I wouldn't recommend going out of your way to find this place.
