“Awesome hotel... crappy front desk staff!!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 February 2012

We stayed here February 2 to 10, 2012. We had a delux ocean view room, which faced the empty lot beside the hotel. It was a great room with a FANTASTIC view of the ocean! Beautiful!

Whenever we travel to Mexico, we always skip the shuttle bus that comes with the package, and take a taxi. It beats riding the bus for an hour while it stops at every resort in the area to drop people off. We did the same this trip, and are REALLY glad we did. (more on that later).

Our check in was fairly painless. We were in our room and back out to the bar within half an hour of arriving by taxi. Be forewarned though, taxi rides in this area are REALLY expensive compared to other Mexico trips we've taken.

Every, single staff member in this resort bent over BACKWARDS to make our stay great... except the front desk staff. There is not a waiter or waitress, bartender, host or hostess that did not make us smile and trip over themselves to make our stay great!! Fantastic people work here!!!

The food was okay. It's buffet food, and there is only so much they can do with buffet food when you're trying to cook for 400+ people. The restaurants were always clean, well stocked, well staffed and the food hot.

The beach is BEAUTIFUL! Well, except for the annoying "vultures" (Mexicans selling their wares on the beach... where apparently NO does NOT mean NO!)

The pool area is fantastic!! The largest pool is not heated, so there was nobody it in the whole time we were there. The other pools were heated and were really nice. Beware that people start reserving their deck chairs the night before. So if you leave your "reservation" until after 0800, you may not get to sit near the warmed pools.

We approached the front desk and asked them if we could extend our check-out time from 1100 to 1900 as we didn't fly out until 2230. The agreed, and quoted us $70 USD. Fair price. Thankfully, she gave us a receipt! At noon sharp on check-out day, our key stopped working. No big deal. But when we went to check out, they tried to charge us DOUBLE what we were quoted, and actually argued with us!! Thankfully I had the receipt of the original quote, which they then charged us only $70 USD.

We found any time we had to deal with the front desk staff or concierge, they were snotty, rude, angry and anything BUT helpful! They were horrible!!! We made many new friends on our trip, and heard story after story of how awful the front desk staff was. When the shuttle bus from the airport arrived at the hotel, it took almost 3 hours for some people to get checked in!!! They expect this plane every single week, yet were completely unprepared for the crowd. There was a couple there on our last day who had been there 8 hours and still didn't have a room!!!!!! That is NOT acceptable.

This hotel was AWESOME!! But, I'm reluctant to recommend it due to the front desk staff. They truly were miserable, unhappy people!!!!

“Awesome Experience!!”

We were there Jan 30, 2012 until Feb 6, 2012 and had a great time. We are a family of 4 (2 kids 8 and 4). We also travelled with my parents who had their own room. We arrived and had no issues with check in. I had requested a room beside my parents on a high floor and both requests were accommodated. The rooms were perfect! No complaints other than being used to sleeping in a king size bed and having to share a double bed was pretty cozy! The resort is fabulous and I have NO complaints! The pools were awesome, the beach was well maintained and very clean, the food was very very good and the entertainment team was great. We all enjoyed playing bingo by the pool everyday and the kids loved the heated pools as well as the ocean. We travel to Mexico every year and this is approx our 10th trip and is by far the best resort we have stayed at. We will be back next year and will stay 10 days next time. The Hola Grand knows what they are doing as there is just the right balance of activities and they are in a great location. We all felt VERY safe and it is even walking distance to Starbucks (10 minute walk)! We ate out a couple nights at other restaurants in the area to get a change and also did a day trip into Cabo for a boat ride and shopping. Everything was perfect !!

We stayed here Jan 30 2012 to Feb 06 2012 and stayed in a partial garden view. Only issue is the room had 2 double beds . Great location ,Extreamly clean and well kept. Great beach. Buffet food is buffet food but they did good with it. Found the drinks a little week for me but thats just my taste. Of all the places we have been these are the nicest staff yet.( tip or no tip) I dont get time for breakfast at home so I really loved the fresh omlete Maria would make for me. Thanks.

“"A piece of heaven"”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 February 2012

We went to San Jose del Cabo for the first time not knowing quite what to expect and found a little piece of heaven.
We have stayed in a five star resort on the Mayan Riviera and didn't enjoy it nearly as much as the Grand Faro. We stayed in the Sol Tower and the room was wonderful with a nice big soaker tub. It has about 330 rooms so it was not overwhelming to walk to and from our room every day like it was in the five star....a perfect size for us.
There was a heated pool over looking the ocean and the beach, as well as a heated activities pool. Many resorts do not heat any of their pools so they go unused as they are too cold to swim in.
The breakfast and lunch buffet was held in a beautiful open air restaurant also located right on the ocean! What a wonderful way to start the day....best scrambled eggs I ever had.
The staff were always friendly and professional....we tipped quite generously but others did not tip at all and the service was always great.
We took a bus into Cabo and did a snorkel tour with Cabo Escape Tours that was so much fun...we even got to see humpback whales as a bonus.
There was always some kind of activity going on for those who wanted to participate, but no pressure to do so....the activities director Francisco seemed to work from morning til night without a break....incredible energy.
We felt very safe and everything was clean and well maintained..and NO BUGS to speak of which was a bonus.
They have 4 hammocks poolside that were a great treat when you wanted to get out of the sun and read your book.
I guess the only complaint we had was that they did not have Kaluha (in Mexico?) and they ran out of sparkling wine at the pool from time to time (not a big deal) and we would like to have experienced the Skybar but I think that it wasn't busy enough to warrant opening it...next time. We are definitely going back....we walked the gorgeous long beach in front of the hotel and we thought the Hola Grand Faro looked the nicest.

“Good experience”

Take the good with the bad. Food was very good, grounds are beautiful, its a smaller resort so it is nice if you don't like riding a golf cart everywhere. It is one resort where I didn't feel pressure to tip even though we usually do anyway. The staff works very hard and are always smiling.
We loved that we could walk to Sanjose, it was a nice 20 minute walk and we did it about 4 times. And it was a convenient bus ride to San Lucas that brought you right to the marina.
We didn't like the bars closed at 11pm and you couldn't get a beer until 11 the next morning. Not that I am an alcoholic but we like to have a beer and clamato sometimes when we are on holidays. There was no beer in the fridge in your room which we thought was odd. We got to the resort at 10 pm and got a beer from the bar and it was fairly busy with people. We took a stroll around the property and came back to get another beer and everything was dark and quiet. If you tried to order a drink with room service they charged you for it.
The staff was very friendly however the front desk staff were not accommodating and didn't apologize for it either. We were not impressed with the few incidents we had with them regarding changing rooms due to noisy neighbours and being put in a room on the main floor facing the activity pool and had 2 single beds. Were not given an option and felt like they didn't care if we weren't happy. We had booked a deluxe ocean view room and that is not what we had. Everytime you go get change for smaller pesos they always said come back in an hour. They never did have change.
We went the night before we were to leave and asked for late checkout,we were told to just call in the morning,so at 7;30 am after 2 call attempts and being told they would call me back with no call back, we ended up walking to the front desk and were told it was impossible to have a late checkout but that we could use the hospitality room to shower and change in later in the day. We returned to the desk at around 4:30 and were told we should have signed up for the hospitality room and they only had a 6 o'clock opening.Nobody said we needed to sign up and I didn't think of it because we have never had this problem before, we were leaving a 6:15. So we had to change in the public bathroom in a stall. We did notice our room was not even cleaned until 4 pm.
We talked to a guy who had been there for 3 days and still didn't have a safe in his room on the main floor. He asked us if we had one because he was told that the main floor rooms didn't have safe's. We definately had a safe on the main floor.
They have 4 pools but only 2 you can actually tolerate to swim in because of the temperature.
Our room got cleaned every second day and so we had to go hunt down water. One day the lady came at 5:30 pm to clean.
The sky bar was not functioning and people we spoke to said they were there for 2 weeks and had not seen it open once.
We are not really picky people but I think it was just the combination of everything, we were just fed up by the time we left.
We were considering having our wedding there next year which is one reason for our trip. Spoke to the wedding planner the second day we were there and she was super helpful and printed off information for me. Loved cabo but will not be having my wedding at this hotel. Have to keep searching.

Room Tip: If you can , upgrade to the sol towers.
