My husband and I went to Melia Cabo Real from April 05 to 12th and had a really wonderful time. We have been to Mexico many times, but this was our first trip without the kids as an anniversary gift to ourselves.
Upon our arrival there was a bottle of champagne with two wine glasses in our room upon arrival. We were so impressed with their thoughtfulness! Thank you so much Melia - that really made our entire stay !!!! It is these 'little things' that sets this resort above others that we have stayed at or read reviews about.
The resort seemed to be full but we did not feel crowded at all. The only issue was with towels and finding a good lounge chair for the day. EVERYONE puts down towels in the morning on their favorite lounge spot despite signs everywhere saying this is not allowed. I never saw any employees remove towels despite warnings. If you are not an early riser, you might find that you get left with the older plastic chairs that are not very comfortable and not close to the pool at all. I was lucky as my husband is up early and would put down our towels in a good spot for the day. I suggest that if you want to sleep in, plan on going down to the beach for your relaxing sun time. I found a lot of open chairs down there at all times during the day. Most people seemed to prefer staying by the pool. However, there is no drink service at the beach so you might need to stock up before going down. This is probably why the beach area was not crowded at all.
The pool was really big and the service around the pool was excellent. We got everything we wanted very quickly.
Given I have kids, I did peak at the kids area of the pool and found it a little small. It would be the right size for kids 4 and under, but if you have an active 5 year old or older, plan on being in the water most of the day as it is too small to contain active kids. Be sure to bring life-jackets or floatation items for your kids if you want to be in the deeper area of the pool.
The a la carte restaurants were very nice and we never had a problem getting a reservation at any of them. We booked the day before for the next evening. Without the kids we were able to be very flexible on our time, but if you have kids and want an early time maybe book or day or two in advance. The Italian restaurant was very nice. Be sure to try the Creme Caramel - SOOOOOOO GOOD!
The buffet food was good and we were able to find lots of things that we liked. I especially liked the theme nights. What a refreshing treat!
The surprise hit of the week was when they had dinner served outside on the beach and had a live band. Not only was it a lovely change, but it was very thoughtful of resort to do this. We saw employees start to set up the night before, but assumed it was for a wedding and not the entire resort. The only drawback was I found the given the size of the resort the buffet was quiet small. I've been to smaller resorts that had large buffets with a few more options.
The staff at Melia is so wonderful. They are so polite, kind, generous, and always looking to help. Everyone had a smile on their faces, always said hello, and if we needed anything at all, they were at our side in moments. I can't say enough about how wonderful the staff really was. If service is your number one priority, this is the place for you.
The beach was very big which I found really nice. The sand starts out coarse but then seems to change to the soft sand that everyone loves. If you've got kids and you want to spend the day at the beach, pack as much as you can otherwise you will get some good excercise walking back and forth to your room. I found the beach vendors VERY polite and we were not bothered by them at all. Anyone who has been to Mexico knows that beach vendors can be very annoying. The Melia has also been very smart in offering a roped off area where guests can find soft lounge chairs and nice palapas for relaxing and the beach vendors do not cross that line. Very smart !!!!
Cabo is a very safe city and we took the bus into town on many occasions. The Melia is nicely located between Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo. We only travelled into Cabo San Lucas as this seemed to have all the 'touristy' things to do with a lot of shopping. I would suggest getting off the resort at least once and go into town. There is a lot of things to see and do and eat there. The marina area is very popular with the Galeria having a great market to shop and barter for souvineers.
The only thing I did not like about this resort was the beds. OH MY !! They were so hard it was like sleeping on a block of cement!!! We did ask for a mattress pad, and promptly got one, but it only made a very marginal difference. My husband didn't seem to mind it, and might even have preferred the firmer mattress, but by the end of the week I didn't sleep well on the last few nights. If not for the beds, I would have given this resort a 10 out of 10 for sure.
In the end, even with the terrible beds, I would go back to the Melia again. The staff was spectacular, the service over the top, we loved everything about it. In fact, it has made me look at other Melia resorts in Mexico because we were so pleased with everything.
If you've got kids; stay in the rooms closest to the pool or you might find long walks back to y...
